Hello my virtual running buddies, both those who are running virtually and those who are virtually running
Well today did not go entirely to plan... seemingly a couple of weeks after I was using weather as an excuse not to run, here I am again nearly using weather as an excuse to run. Long story, but I'll abbreviate it: I intended to go out about 8:30 this morning, before it got too hot, since the British weather has decided that this weekend is "summer". I got a phone call from work, something about "the internet" having gone down, and none of the warehouse staff could do any work. What, the entire internet, I said? To cut a long story short, our hosting provider was having a bad day, it was all working again by about half ten, so off I went.
Out into the bright sunshine.
Back inside, forgot my sunglasses!
Out into the hot sun.
Back inside, I probably need sunscreen!
Finally... back out for my first of the Couch to 5K+ podcasts, the "Stepping Stone" one.
No dramas to report really... I really enjoyed having the proper running music, once I managed to convince my legs that they wanted to go at the same pace as the music. I did want to shake Laura warmly by the throat at several points, for the whole "1-2-3-4" thing, yes Laura, I can count, thank you very much. Of course, Laura is lovely and a true inspiration, and I am usually grumpy, especially after my lovely run was delayed by the wrong sort of IT.
The pace changes were great actually. The tempo of the music was only changing by a small amount, almost imperceptible, but I was definitely running faster by the end, but at a speed I felt I could sustain. The music just helped me keep my pace, and not rush ahead or fall back.
I forgive Laura for trying to teach me to count again, and as an olive branch, I will do it all again in a day or two
Oh - and if I look hot, well, trust me, there's nothing attractive about arriving back drenched in a mix of sweat and sun screen. Not that sort of "hot" I'm afraid
Still, if I’m thinking of evil ways to shut our lovely Laura up, at least I’m not thinking about feeling tired. I’m definitely sold on the whole idea of running to a specific tempo track, too.
All the best for your 10k training then I don’t think I’m aiming for 10k, more aiming for 5k I’m 30 minutes. It said Couch to 5k and the time for week 9 is 30 minutes, therefore I want to run 5k in 30 minutes or less. Gosh I am so OCD sometimes...
After the first few set backs Neil, you picked up and set off on your way. I've done part of the stamina podcast, they're very good too. I was contemplating a run today, but not in this heat, my face is red within 10 mins of starting running, but to have this heat on top, is a no no.
Thanks for the encouragement, it means a lot. Yes, I did find the heat a struggle, but I managed ok. Definitely in dire need of a shower when I got back though!! I wonder how those brave folks who do ultra marathons in the Sahara must feel...
Yes, I wondered that earlier, as I watched someone jogging through town when I passed them in my car, lol. I thought about those who did the London marathon, they were all very brave runners, what with the heat etc.
I like the C25K + podcasts and even have a grin now at the cheesy 'feet to the beat' type comments. However if you want to strangle Laura on the Stepping Stone one wait until you try out Speed 😂
Good work for getting out there today though - too hot for me by mid-morning.
It’s just so funny to hear 1-2-3-4 in Laura’s crystal clear measured tones with her perfect diction. I intend to try all the podcasts, so I shall report back!
Cor, you’re a brave lad running in that heat! I went for an early walk in the woods this morning, and it was already pretty hot by 9am! Good work though, sounds like you are right into your running mojo, and that makes me very happy!
I tried the speed podcast a while back and loved it (despite not being a fan of the music). Must do that one again once I am back up and running - was not half as hard as I was expecting.
Thank you, my personal cheerleader xx yes - mojo is certainly here. I’m annoyed I shouldn’t be running tomorrow, I want to get back out there, see if the aforementioned mojo is where I left it
And I really hope you get back to full strength soon, I know how much you have grown to love running
