Getting fit for 50

Hi all - hoping the powers of this amazing community will spur me on : )

I will be 50 in June next year. Used to be so fit and slim, then long working hours took over and whaaaaat?! Am I really this heavy and unfit? How did that happen? (Office snacks, wine and no exercise could be partly to blame)

No I say! I will be fit at fifty. I refuse to give in to middle age spread. I do not want to stay in the zone of ‘increased risk of diabetes’. I want to be as healthy as I can be. I want to be energetic and active.

That is all!

Doing my first run on the Couch to 5K this weekend. Just need to keep focused and not give in to my brain telling me ‘you work hard, you deserve to relax’. No stupid brain, I deserve exercise because it is good for me.

Fit at fifty - hope someone will hold me to it! : )

I’m almost 50, 17 stone and smoked 40 a day for 20 years...and i have just completed week 5 running for 20mins. This after doing nothing for 30 years. It’s amazing - each stage is tough, some more than others, but after week one and thinking I can’t even run for a minute, I now know I can do it - you can too...just follow the programme and don’t try to go too fast at the start. Good luck...

Amazing, I am impressed! Thanks for sharing that - I need all the encouragement I can get, hope I do as well as you 🏃‍♀️

Good luck you can do it. Take it one run at a time. I was the same. Slim fit and able to enjoy food and 🍷 however life takes over. Work kids stress and I gave up exercise and started eating and drinking more. As you say I deserve it after caring for everyone else. I have just finished week 1 and feel that it will be something I can do if I use the support of this app and take it one run at a time. Good luck you are beginning the next chapter of your life. Fit and firm at 50.

Good luck - you can do it! I find a lot of it is my mind telling me to quit & when I ignore it it turns out my body can do it. Let us know how you get on!

in reply to SelatiJ

Thank you, I am sure half the battle is my mind 😄

It's actually more than half. Many gremlins will appear along the way with reasons and excuses for why you should stop. Be prepared for them and don't give them chance to plant self doubt 👍😁

Good advice- thank you 😀

Nice one. I’ll be 50 this October and started c25k last October as a non runner. Now I can do 10k and have run 5k in less than 25 mins. Never thought it possible.

Stay with the programme and you’ll be amazed at what you can do 😊

in reply to MikeJones68

Fantastic- well done 👍🏻

This programme is designed to start non runners off, gradually building stamina.

You can definitely do it. Check the standard FAQ post for beginners. That is filled with good advice, a lot of good advice, so keep referring to it.

This forum has people showing their progress and providing moral support, so post your progress. It should all help keep you motivated.

I am just at the end of week 1 and feel great.

Good luck.

I'm 52 and 3 stone overweight and I ran 5k without stopping for the first time EVER last week. If I can do it you can. Trust in the programme and keep going. Good luck.

Yes, I too am approaching 5-0 and thought I don’t wanna be bald, fifty and fat. Bald, 50 and slim is within my control though...

Great post and comments - what a great community, brilliant initiative and superb app to boot!

Go for it! I turned 50 two days ago, and about to complete W6 tomorrow (Started C25K in Jan... a bit behind schedule!) My Fitbit fitness score is 35 which last week was telling me I was in the “good” for my age zone(40-49), yesterday the same score of 35 said I was “excellent “ for my age range of 50-59! One perk of being 50, I can now say I’m fit!
