Hello all! I am very excited to say I have begun my journey to reach 5k! I completed my first run today and I feel great. The run was an uphill struggle as I am looking to quit smoking so my breathing was hard towards the end. Any tips to help me as I continue down this journey would be appreciated and I am happy to have joined this community!
First run done!!: Hello all! I am very excited... - Couch to 5K
First run done!!
Well done on giving up smoking, that’s a major achievement too. I’m sure I won’t be the first to advise slow and steady with your running . Your breathing will improve over time as long as you don’t rush to be speedy Gonzales.
Well done! I don'’t smoke and my breathing was hard at the end.
Cue someone coming along and saying "slow down", but I would be going backwards if I did.
Good luck with the next run.
Nothing wrong with going backwards

Well done for beginning this exciting journey to fitness. The programme is great and really works if you follow it, and don’t forget that rest days between running are an important part. Using the App or podcasts can be a real help too so that you don’t have to worry about timing the different bits.
Come to the forum often to celebrate your runs, and get helpful advice and guidance when you need it.
Good luck with quitting smoking too.

Hiya. I've been doing this a while now as a smoker. Funnily enough my breathing became easier as time went on and it's my legs that hurt now, not my chest! That said I made the decision and gave up the dirty fags last Monday. I'm vaping now so hope my to see my breathing improve for my runs. On here there's a quit smoking group. I highly recommended you join it, as they are as supportive as the c25k gang here. If you look at my posts you'll find a link to them (sorry not sure how to post a link here but it's called 'quit support'). Good luck. You can do it! x
Hi Tfn. Just finished my first run, too. I realise how unfit I am but it's made me more determined to do run 2. Good luck for your next one.
Hey! I tried C25K last year as a heavy smoker and didn’t even get to the second lot of 60 second running so well done 😁 I quit smoking in November and started C25K a couple of weeks ago and have found it much easier (as far as breathing goes). I really don’t do much more than a jog though and have put together a playlist to help keep me motivated. Have you quit smoking or just hoping to at the moment?
Yeah I quit smoking a few months ago and have been on the vape since, I am hoping to be off the vape and smoking all together in the next month or so 😊 but yeah all I can manage is a slow jog at the moment but it’s better than nothing I suppose 😁🏃♂️
“It’s better than nothing”... it’s far more than that. Going slowly is exactly what you’re meant to do on this programme. It’s all about getting you to run/ aka jog for 30 minutes. The best way to do this is to take it really slow and steady.
You don’t need to even think about speed as everyone will tell you.
Hope run 2 went well. 👍🏽
