You have made the very best start by coming to the forum...listen to the great advice you’ll get from admins and mentors. Lap up the encouragement from all the rest. And see it as a process with goals as little treats along the way. Stick with us - we need each other!

I was 57 with dodgy knees and I started 4½ years ago and were it not that I am undergoing treatment for cancer at present, I believe I would be fitter than at any time in my life.

C25K works and can transform your life. You know those corny slogans about exercise "Feel fitter and happier"........well they are not bull, it is a fact when you exercise regularly and there is no better way to start than C25K.

Read this guide healthunlocked.com/couchto5... and you will see it is totally possible.

Do it!!

I started last june age 59 after packing up smoking and gaining a couple of stone, now well the weight has gone, I am truly so much fitter/healthier.

September reaching 60 was called in to Drs for an mot, discovered blood pressure was slightly high, this week I am monitoring bp again and have to report back to drs after and am pleased to say it's back down in the range of normal and my resting pulse rate at 63

The above has been achieved with NO medication purely exercise

I am now also in training for my 1st half marathon

Firstly, check you this post and the links. Complied by a member of the Admin/mentoring team. The information is invaluable.

Then, just read past posts for inspiration... it is all there... :) The motivation is within you. You have to want to do this and you are here:) So that is a great start... welcome!

My tips.. to add to the many you will receive; warm up well, stretch after every run, take it slow and steady :) and above all enjoy!!!

Some links here for knee exercises and stretching to get you started.. :)

The motivation you need is to remind yourself of the first sentence of your post:

"Have wanted to run for years but can never really get motivated."

If not today, then when? Do you want to still be wanting but not doing ten years from now, too?

Commit yourself to this programme. 3 runs per week for the next 9 weeks. The runs are quite short, so the time commitment is not that huge. If you decide you don't like running after you have finished, then at least you will know - and you'll be fitter for it. My guess however, is that like most of us you will be a runner for life.

Yes!! I am sure you can do this and won’t regret it! I’m 53 and I have recently graduated and it’s by far the best thing I have ever done for myself! I have quite a physical job too and have osteoarthritis although not in knees! But I absolutely love it! I’m full of energy and it’s done wonders for my mental health too! This forum is so supportive! I’d really recommend you give it a go! 😀

Looks like I best get my trainers out then lol, I've got a 6 month old cockerpoo pup and every other night we do a 3.5 mile fast walk takes an hour or a bit more if she gets too distracted, so hopefully a bit of a run on the other nights won't hurt too mich, I'm also type 1 diabetes for last 20 yrs, could that have anything to do with when I've tried to run before my legs seem to run out of steam and I grind to a halt, blood flow maybe ??

Morning Busted - I have only just started myself. Keep it simple, look no further than Run 1. Don't over analyse or overthink it. Don't wait to be 100% motivated to do it. Just do it. Then once done enjoy the feeling of achievement have a rest day and look to Run 2 ..... Good Luck.

You can do it! a lot of us older, didn't excercise and with achey knees have gone on to great things. It helps to keep weight down as the forces of running going through the knees go up a lot with every extra pound of weight. I take Omega3 fish oil and Glucosamine to help with the joints..
