Dilemma! Help, please...

W5 run3 - the 20 min run completed, feeling particular please with myself because in addition to running (slowly) for the whole thing, I had a further obstacle I.e a bit if a cold and a mild sore throat! My smugness was predictably in hindsight (is that an oxymoron) short lived as the very next day my 'bit of a cold' had evolved into a ful on stinking cold, cough, raised temp, the lot. - could barely shuffle around the house let alone run! Two days gone 1 run missed. Day 3 and 4 since last run, I'm away from home with a work thing, no opportunity to complete a run. (and I'm still churning out copious snot) Day 5 is tomorrow , sooo busy so no run again. I'm looking at Thursday . 6 days after last run. I'm worried (a) that I will never bother to run again, (b) I've lost all the fitness I've gained (c) if I do run again do I start week 6 or go back to previous weeks if so where? Has anyone of you good people had this dilemma? And how did you resolve it ? Thank you for reading this far :-) <3

Hi Becca, sorry to hear you've been poorly and haven't had a chance to go running for a few days..

Don't worry, you have done W5 R3, and will be able to manage W6 R1 as it is an interval run again. You won't have lost that much fitness, sometimes an enforced rest can be good for your legs..

Give W6 R1 a go...take it steady and remember how good you felt after your last run. Take this positivity with you....

Good luck😊x

Thank you so much for your response to my dilemma, your words have resonated around my thoughts since and finally today, after work off I went on wk6r1 (it was tough keeping going but I did) . It feels good to be back :-) :-) :-)

Easily solved :) Just do the hardest bit first - gear up and out the door. The run will take care of itself :)

Your REAL danger is the same as for every single one of us here..

That patient and cunningly alluring Couch...one day on it can turn into the rest of your life....be strong! be a Runner!

I wouldn't get too stressed about it Becca. Just rest up and when you feel better get back out there and do your W6. There is no timetable. Every person is on a different schedule. The main thing is to go back to it and just continue. As john says, leave your gear out the night before and just go. Hope you heal up well and Happy Trails!

Thank you - I did indeed leave my gear out and refusded to mentally engage with not going - and im happy ti say im back on track :-)

That's wonderful Becca - I love that "refuse to engage mentally with not going"! :) That's the way!

Refusing to engage mentally; a transferable skill -honned from many years ignoring my fitness . . Every cloud, ehh! :-)

Bluebirdrunner has given you some sound advice... we don't lose fitness that quickly... ( luckily for many of us who have had spells on the IC)

Just do that Week 6 Run 1, start slowly, keep it slow.. relax and breathe gently as you go. Let the legs carry you :)

You will be fine, but I will warn you in advance so you don't feel too despondent and think you can't run anymore wk6 run1 is a little blighter and catches people out so if the going is a bit hard just take down the run down a notch and you will be fine. Also look after yourself and don't push too much while your body is recovering from your cold.

I'm a week behind you, but had the same issue -- travelling and then got waylaid by a cold that knocked me flat -- and I ended up not running for 8 days. So dilemma was to repeat week 4 or move onto week 5. I decided to start week 5 on Monday and... it was a lot easier than I thought it would be and I felt so much more accomplished doing it instead of week 4 again!

Wk5r1 was where I ended a year ago, not because of illness but because it was raining and kept raining....! So, I'm keeping an eye out for rain today ;)

Good luck - you can do it!

Ahh, @smallbrit - exactly where I am too, same circumstances and about to do week 5 run 2 tomorrow- we can all do this.

Thsnk you really helpful advice - I was thinking of going back a week but your advice and others on here suggested moving forwards. From a psychological perspective so the best thing (I can now say in hindsight! ) ferls like a real accomplishment. You must be at about the same point as me now? Im w6r2 on Saturday. :-)

I was going to start week 7 on Monday but I still feel crappy, hot and cold, nauseas.... 🙁. So on hold until I'm on the mend!

BeccaMM profile image
BeccaMM in reply toNickycatwoman

That's how I was - had a five day gap, between runs which, in hindsight was ok. I'm starting wk7 on Saturday! !! Get well soon :-)
