First run today!!

Well I eventually got off my backside and decided to start the app. Not the best of starts either - I didn't manage to run the whole 60 seconds after the fifth time. I knew I was unfit but this is scary. Please tell me it gets easier????

It might not get easier but you'll definitely get better at it!

Hi Kegwills don't worry. It will get easier every time you do it. First of all congratulations for even getting off the couch. You're doing better than all those that didn't!! Second of all try and slow it down if you can...Even if you feel you're already going slowly (I know I did) you can still dial it back I'm sure...as long as you keep moving you can go as slow as humanly possible! Keep going and try again - and don't move up from week 1 until you feel comfortable. The plan takes effort but you will get there I promise. You may have to repeat it more than 3 times but that's absolutely fine. Everyone goes at their own pace. Keep at it and you'll have it cracked in no time. And remember you've made the hardest step by starting the plan today so it only gets easier from here!

It does get easier, very quickly.

Don't be discouraged, just hold the thought that you've made a start, and you did run the first 5 of the minutes... That's infinitely more than you would have done if you'd been on the settee.

Take your rest day(s), then next time go slow and steady. Your only aim at the moment is to be able to run for the specified times - speed is not a factor. And if you do have to stop, then keep walking as fast as you can until the end of that section.

BTW, if the voices in your head start telling you that you can't do it, tell them to do one, because you absolutely CAN. 🏃😊

A few weeks ago I struggled to run a minute, yesterday I ran for 37 minutes non stop. This plan really works, with every run your body is slowly getting ready that graduation run. Like I was told early on in this plan, run slowly, very slowly. You will get there without any doubt, good luck :)

Thanks all. Felt a mixture of elation for having started then failure for not managing all of the runs. Repeating weeks sounds like a good idea, I'm in no rush to be a 5k runner. I am however already looking forward to my next attempt.  :)

That's such a good attitude to have and whatever you do don't feel as though it's a failure. Like you say, there's no rush and it's amazing how easily you get into the swing of things after a run or two.

Hi Kegwells, I too finally ran out of excuses to not run and made the effort and completed my first run, so a big well done for walking out of the front door, I know how hard it is! And yes it was a shock to the system, but after reading all the blogs for us newcomers the key thing seems to be 'slow and steady'. Looking forward to Wednesday's run. Let me know how you get on. Good luck.

Slow your pace down next time you go out. Go slow. Barely faster than walking slow. If it has to be slower than walking to complete the section then go slower than walking!

It can seem ridiculously hard when you first go out but the programme is amazing and works.

Stick to it, slow and steady and you will amaze yourself.

Good luck :)

Congratulations on starting! I really struggled on W1R1 but, after reading the advice given by people on the forum I slowed down and succeeded in running for all of the minutes. I can't tell you it gets easier, but it does become possible! I did W3R1 yesterday and managed the 3 minute runs. The effect that had on my self esteem was nothing short of spectacular! If you stick with it and go out each time with no expectations but with curiosity to discover what you can do you will probably surprise yourself. Take it slow and steady and prepare to be amazed!

Thank you for all of the advice, I did my second run yesterday and actually managed each 60 second run this time. I slowed my running right down and it really helped. Although I have to say by the last run I was probably going about as fast as a snail!!!!! I don't care though cos I did it and can't wait for tomorrow's run.

Well done Keggers !

Keep going , youre doing great !

Yep, slow is the way forward , don't worry about your speed at all, its all about completing the runs xxx

Well done, don't be afraid to repeat weeks if you have to. I started in January and am only now on week 9. You will get there and there's loads of great advice on here to help you through :)

I've had an injury so not ran for nearly a week now and I have to say although I'm no good at running I've missed it! I'm going to see how I go but will probably repeat wk2 again. Hoping to go out today.
