Please don't feel self conscious - it just adds one extra anxiety to the run. Hard I know, but you are doing fine- off the couch which is an amazing first step. You are bound to have some aches and pains as your body adjusts to the shock of exercise. Try some post run/rest day strengthening exercises.

You can get 'gait analysis' and recommended running shoes. I waited until I felt committed, others feel that buying shoes cements their commitment.

Take it slow and enjoy the adventure :)

Well done.

In a few weeks time you will realise that when you are out running you become invisible to the general public and most of those who do see you will probably think "Good for you".

The best shoes are those that fit and support you as required. The best way to find which those shoes are is to follow helenwheels' advice and have a gait analysis carried out at a specialist running shop. We all have different feet and gait, so my recommendation may be totally inappropriate for you.

Keep it up. This can change your life.

I hear you! Completed my first run today too and although I did it at 7am in the morning and it was quiet I still felt self conscious until I put my shades on and decided to just go for it and then it was fine. It definitely helped. Give it a try 🙂🙂

Other runners will see you and think well done. Non-runners will see you and think I need to exercise!

I love it when I'm out and about and can give new runners a smile and hello. I remember how I felt when I first started.

I'm always inspired by people who are doing it instead of thinking about doing it or making excuses. We've all been there so take the smiles of strangers for what they are, support, encouragement, awe for how fab you are. Your smile back might just make someone's day xxx
