Windy and then wet

I've been running to low heartrate lately, I love a slow plod and Garmin hates me, docking V02MAX and adding years to my fitness age πŸ™„, this week I've had a cold, they are a bit like PMT.....I seem to get one every month!!I nearly talked myself out of going when I received a message from the lovely Jools2020 telling me she was back and how wet it is up there and much colder than here. I looked out, the rain had stopped, the sun was out, I'd run out of excuses 🀣. The wind was blowing 22 mph from south west and it was 13 degrees so shorts it had to be.

Off I went, I couldn't be bothered choosing a play list so left the radio on, it made a nice change actually.

A walk down the road, turn onto the main road and blustery wind, I have a new peaked headband, felt perfect and kept the sun out of my eyes.

Got into a nice rhythm, HR not too high, arrived at the seafront, 1.6k covered. Waited for lights to change, crossed the road and oh! That breeze in my face....decided to do the planned 30 seconds intervals with a minute slow run between, not that fast but quite hard enough,, paused the watch at 3k to pop onto the beach and take photos, turned and sprinted off! Wind behind me and running fast, but was soon out of breath so walk/ran back along the seafront. Lights were with me so sprinted across first half of road, paused a second and sprinted across second half, wind gusted, headband flew off half way over, carried on, waited for a gap and sprinted back, picked it up and over again, tucked it into my waistband, I only got it yesterday, don't want to lose it yet.

Beginning to tire, slow run with short walking intervals, just past 5k rain started so headband back on head, kept rain off glasses.....and home. Anyway, 6.14k covered, 1hr 9 min according to Garmin.

Have fun running or resting all.

Sounds a good headband and glad it didn't escape! This weather is proper old English April showers, isn't it, cooling wind but nice and sunny between the rain. Perfect when it's not showering. I'm not in shorts yet though!!! Lovely photos, especially the blossom 🌸 . Have fun running and resting πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ›‹.

Thanks, yes I'd have been mad if it blew away further but got caught up on the grass on the central but, it's a T junction dual carriageway so can be difficult to cross

That must have been quite a gust to take off your headband - they are good aren't they, I've got one I've acquired from my son who used to wear it when he did rowing. Might have to get one of my own in case he remembers and asks for it back!πŸ˜‚

I love the sound of your run, you tailored it to suit you, and the rain was mostly kind to you...

It was gusty on the coast, but made for hard intervals against it

It’s amazing that the wind managed to take your headband off. Seriously impressive that you made it out for such a great run in those conditions!!

Garmin can be a fickle friend. Stick him in a drawer if he’s too rude!

That was a nice 6.14K run for you yesterday Sue, pity about the rain, I am glad that you enjoyed the short walking intervals as well. πŸ‘βœ”οΈ

Thanks Al, it was only the last kilometre that it rained and I was really warm by then so it didn't matter

Great run and shorts !! Getting warmer here as well , but rain had enough of it. Missed a couple of walks this because of it, glad you got your headband , you’ll have to tie it tighter Saturday/Sunday meant it to be really stormy, that reminds me of my baseball hat that blew off in the wind and trying to capture it. 🧒

Thanks Doris, yes I've made it a bit tighter, I'm a little tired of gusting wind

hello fellow 6k-er! Well run!

And I was also trying to keep my heart rate down this morning, but I I cannot help going into zone 4 when running. Runkeeper says average 144bpm, and spent 80% in Zone4.

The other day, I did manage a 5k run staying in zone 3, but not today.

How do you use your HR to adjust your runs?

SueAppleRun profile image

Hi, I make a workout in Garmin app and send to my phone, it buzzes if I go too high, I worked out the zones online, going from high HR to low HR and age and lifestyle. I don't use the Garmin ones as they are the 220-age and not correct. I do a lot of zone 1 for warm up and cool down and zone 2 for steady run, which means I can run for miles without walk breaks. That run though was just a run, with intervals and a cold, so heartrate was a bit high. With the intervals average was 151.

Thanks for this. Will have a ponder. The HRM really helps to keep runs slow and low effort, I find.
