I was thinking about doing something besides running, something to increase my fitness level a bit more. Somehow I came onto rope jumping and ordered one yesterday, which should arrive today.
Now I was wondering, I'd like to do the rope jumping every day. Building up from scratch with very basic exercises to (after weeks) more complicated exercises. But when should I do the rope jumping and when the running. I mean, to I jump before running or do I jump after running?
If you put a programme together, would you want to possibly post on our Strength and Flex forum? healthunlocked.com/strength...
Runners searching for strength and flexibility exercises often drift over there and we have a lot of workouts in our various folders. See healthunlocked.com/strength...
There are also examples for multi-day incremental challenges or programmes. Examples:
Thanks, I am looking through various apps and such to find fun programs for rope jumping. But they all look so difficult and most also have ground exercises in them, which I can't do due to my neck. I am thinking about starting out with this app called '1000 rope jumps', which just increases the amount of jumps on a daily base and this for 30 days or so. And then I might look into more complicated jumping thingies like side jumps, jumping jack jumps etc. First get the base good and then broaden the field, haha.
Do you think I should join the Strength and Flex group? I mean, I am just going to jump. Nothing special and so far no programme or so...
Oh definitely join us over at Strength and Flex, and I think it is special, even if just reporting on how you’re doing. I’d for one would love to read about it. My knees still can’t take a lot of impact but I will be jealously watching and waiting for the day where I might join you! 💪👏🙌
Sounds like fun, I used to love it as a kid! Just watch out for technique, I remember reading ages ago that it can be very high impact of you don't do it properly and that would probably put too much stress on your knees and feet. But it sounds like you're doing a lot of research around it so I'm sure you'll avoid nasty injuries 💪👍 It's also good to do some core training exercises on non run days and I've started doing yoga which is helping with flexibility and strength. I'm not very good at it but I'm enjoying it 🧘♀️ the strength and flex forum does have a lot of ideas for cross training 👍Good luck with your jumping 😃
Didn't Sparky add skipping with a rope to her training a few weeks ago? Seem to remember it didn't end well but I was thinking of doing it too as I don't do much else besides run.
Good luck on your rope jumping. 👍I don’t think it would be for me as had a spinal compression fracture on spine a couple of years ago and jarring don’t think would help. 😕
Honestly not sure if it is all that good for my joints either, having rheumatic artritis. But I also run, so.... And no, with your injury / problem it might not be good!
I think it is skipping? Flemish here (Belgium), not always too sure about certain translations 😜. You can already buy a rope for 2 euro, but I went a bit more expensive. I ordered a rope from Tunturi (Tunturi Adjustable skipping rope Pro - speed rope - 3m- Black). It normally costs 40 euro or something, but when I ordered it earlier this week it was only 27 euro or something. I really want to invest myself in this and thought that I better buy a quality rope.
I do am wondering whether I should also buy a rope skipping mat to protect both the floor and the rope. But those mats cost a lot. I am also wondering where to do it. In my apartment there is no room and outside I would just feel like an idiot. The plan I am going to follow is for 30 days and starts with 20 secs jumping - 1 minute rest - 20 secs jumping. If people would see me, they'd think me weak, haha. So the only other option is in my garage. But I'd have to put my car outside for like 3 minutes which is also so foolish.
Oh well, I'll figure it out. Will have to, this afternoon / evening will be day 1 in my skipping adventure!
I actually just got my jump ropes yesterday as I also wanted to try to add to my fitness, OMG I can’t remember it being so difficult when I was a child 😬 !! Even worse I remember my Dad doing it (he was a boxer so they can all skip!!) and he made it look so easy! I managed about 30 secs, after several attempts getting it wrapped around my feet, incorporating the dogs who suddenly decided to see what all the commotion was about and nearly taking the light fitting out the ceiling, and I was absolutely knackered!! 🥵🥵 I’m defo going to stick with it tho. It’s recommended to jump on a mat tho to reduce impact to your joints! Good luck and keep us posted on your progress! 👍
What you say about the 30 seconds, I found a plan yesterday online for 30 days and it starts on day 1 with 20 seconds jumping - 1 minute rest - 20 seconds jumping. I thought it looked a bit ridiculous to jump for such a short period of time. But reading you, I guess I better stick to that plan!
I also found skipping exercises that look a lot like how boxers do it. They make it look so easy indeed! But first, I want to master just basic jumping. That'll be a big enough challenge to start with 😂. I'm going to follow this plan I found for 30 days and afterwards I can see how I continue (other movements, increase the jumping, or whatever).
Had to laugh at you mentioning almost taking the light fitting out of the ceiling. I'll probably do my jumping in my garage (having to put the car outside for like 3 minutes 🤪) and my mom already warned me to watch the light there.
I am wondering about buying a jumping mat, also to protect the rope itself. But they are so expensive... I wonder if a yoga mat would be ok too. I have 1 very soft 2 mm thick mat, but I worry that the rope might take chunks out of it. And my other yoga mat is thinner but more 'professional' but I also worry about taking chunks out of it. I don't want to ruin my yoga mats even though I don't use them at the moment...
Where did you find the exercises and jump rope plans Black Scorpion? I like to have a plan to work to! And I can always aim to be like one of those boxers one day!! 😃
Online on this site, but it is in Flemish / Dutch. If you scroll down, you reach a plan and you should be able to figure it out even without knowing Dutch 😉. For example '2 x 20 seconden (1 min. rust tussen sets)' means 2 x 20 seconds jumping with 1 minute rest between the sets. Dutch (Flemish) is easy enough eh?
Hidden I started jump rope a few months ago. I alternate my run and strength days so I added the jump rope/skipping to my strength days. Length of rope, type of rope (beaded is good for beginners), posture and a mat. Mats ARE expensive so I use 3 of those interlinking jigsaw type squares. The have good cushioning and so far have worked well. If you look in Facebook or Instagram you can find lauren.jumps, skippingwithsarah and jumprope.dad that I share with my grandsons because he has his kids in the video sometimes. They all have basic info and then they have all the fun stuff. The hardest is not jumping too high, the rope really only needs a tiny space so more of a little bounce like the boxers. And who cares what other people think, most often they are too busy with their own lives to worry about you skipping. Or dead envious!!! Enjoy
The length of rope is ok I think. I looked up a bunch of video's and they alternated between armpit length, shoulder length and collar bone length. I now use collar bone length.
I bought a rope from Tunturi (cdn.webshopapp.com/shops/28... and I hope it's a good one. Not cheap though there are more expensive ones too. It did feel good yesterday, so I hope I made a good buy.
The mats are indeed expensive. I have put down my thickest yoga mat on the floor yesterday evening, so it can uncurl during the day for when I go skipping again after work. It will certainly protect my floor, just hope it's also ok for the skipping itself.
I used to skip a bit, we had a lunch break skipping club in the warehouse where I worked. We would take it in turns to put on some music and try to skip non stop until the end of the song. It's very high intensity! I have a traditional leather rope which is great.
I'm almost certain your rope will mess up your yoga mat. If you can find a really big cardboard box, I imagine that might work.
Ah that's not good news about the yoga mat. Might have to invest in a real skipping mat then? Or I also have a fitness mat which lies underneath my static bike. Would that be good?
Sounds like fun to have a skipping club at work. Don't think that would work at my job, haha.
It was fun, I miss that job. Whatever you use, I think it needs to be either fairly heavy or stiff like cardboard. Otherwise I think the rope will lift it up. We had nice smooth concrete to skip on.
My gran used to do 100 (fairly slow) skips every day, even in her 80's. It's great for your calves and your balance.
Woow, that's fantastic about your granny! Now first I'm going to look for good shoes. Because the ones I tried to use (treadmill running shoes) are too heavy and bulky. And yesterday I skipped on my socks (so bare feet) and I read this is not good. So looking for shoes that are good for skipping: flexible and light, but supportive. And I keep a good eye on my mat, the moment something looks off, I'll be forced to go buy a jumping mat (have to protect my living room floor).
