We’ve run a lot of short runs lately and it’s been a while since I ran 5k so decided it’s time I got back to it. I’m reading the Plant based runner not sure if it’s motivating me or not.

The park is looking green and beautiful, the sky grey and heavy, the world is a wonderful place to be!

Walk round, go round gently, we don’t seem to be able to run slow for the first kilometre, not puffed out or anything and a kilometre covered in 8.26, now that might not sound fast but this is a couple who are happy to get 9 something.

The track round the park was filling up with people and dogs, I ran round the outside on the grass and found to my delight someone has cut a track so short smooth grass to run on.

20 minutes gone and Willow heads for the car, I run past and let him know I’m heading for the seafront and will run home so see him there.

This run felt fine, nothing more nothing less, just a run, no sunshine, no rain, just me with my music trotting along.

The seafront was busy so I didn’t bother crossing the road, plod along until just over 3k had been ran and turn, run alongside a tamarisk hedge which has finished flowering and is full of seed pods…. and then I saw it!! a goldfinch!!! just the one flying facing the hedge and within seconds it had re entered the hedge and disappeared. This goldfinch didn’t know about social distancing because it was about 2 foot from my nose, I don’t think I’ve ever been so close to one. Time to get phone out pocket, unlock, open camera and take photo wasn’t happening, but the pleasure of seeing it stayed with me

So road fairly straight, turn for home, over the bridge, gently down the other side, jeff a bit for the last k and time for 5k 47 minutes, home at 5.47k and i can still run 5 k so happy.

Happy days everyone

Brilliant effort laying down that 5k today to remind yourself of your ability. Happy running 🤗

We’ve got very slack lately,

Your working hard, it’s hot, you’ll get back on it when you’re ready. 🤞

I think some of its habit, looking back though even though i was a bit disappointed in how longer it took it was my fastest 5k since February so it was t too bad, I really must learn to run slower at the start

Grannyhugs profile image
GrannyhugsGraduate10 in reply to SueAppleRun

Running slower at the start is something I fail 99% of the time 😂

Well done for your run, yes, you can still do 5K! How lovely to see the goldfinch 😊

It was beautiful, I’ve had them in the garden in autumn before but never been quite as close

Good run for you today, so the goldfinch didn't know anything about social distancing, o dear, again you have posted 3 lovely photos, enjoy the rest of the day 😊, the sun is shining where I live in Central Scotland, temperature 22C, I am in my garden listening to Spanish music 🎶 on the radio and imaging that I'm on holiday in the Costa Del Sol, 😂 lol.

The weather forecast for next week is to be a bit more changeable but remaining warm with some sunshine, enjoy your holiday next week.

Sounds lovely! I was watching Julia Bradbury in Greece last night and I so wanted to be there. 😊

Nice running you two! 8.26 eh? That’s it, I’m now officially in awe! My last 5k was about 10 days ago and as my knee is now grizzling at me, it may be next week before I attempt another one! How lovely to see a goldfinch, they’re so pretty aren’t they. I get quite a lot in my garden - costs me a fortune in bird food to bribe them in!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to Oldgirlruns

Goldfinches are quite special, I can run one k at that speed then go slower and slower, hope your knee sorts itself out soon, you need to give it a good talking to,

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate10 in reply to SueAppleRun

Talking to given, I’m not sure if I’ve tweaked it somehow or whether it’s grumbling in opposition to the hip which still isn’t quite right. All in all, I have a rather strange gait when walking at the moment! Hey ho, happy running!

I always think being plant based sounds so good but never get round to doing anything about it - it sounds complicated and time consuming. I worry that it won't fill me up and I wouldn't have enough energy to run but I know there are plenty of runners out there that do way more than me on a plant based diet.Your run sounds great. I haven't run since my 10k and it's been so hot that I've made that an excuse. Tomorrow though I'm definitely going out rain or shine - I just hope there'll be a bit of a breeze and no midges!

Goldfinches are so small and pretty aren't they? They particularly love niger seed and sunflower hearts. Ever since I found that out I've put them out in a feeder in the garden and have had quite a few come to visit. I think they're one of my favourites.

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to 59er

Goldfinches are so pretty, they also like cosmos seeds, I have loads of sunflowers in my garden this year so they may visit. My daughter is vegetarian and granddaughter vegan so we eat a lot of plants already, I like meat free Monday and should stick to that but sadly we also love meaty meals, interesting reading though

When I hear plant-based runner, there are two things that come to mind: runner beans and triffids. 🤣

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to nowster

I love runner beans, triffids you can keep

That’s a timely reminder to me of what running should be all about. The happiness and sheer enjoyment of life. Super run.

It won’t stop me running like an idiot mind 😊😂🤪

You are so fast, I ran middle distance in my 20’s and was never fast but loved the joy of going somewhere and feeling free, now in my 60’s i still love the fact that i can run albeit plodding along slowly

nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate10 in reply to RunBrianRun

Indeed you are fast. I wouldn't currently qualify for your new running club. (5K PB of 27'36").

Your 1km PB pace is the the peak pace I was doing when I bailed out after 220m this morning. I knew I couldn't sustain it. Maybe in a few years!

Thank you nowster My first 5k was 36 minutes and that was about 4 years ago when I was 56. I’m sure in time, and if you really want to, and train for it, you will get faster. You will anyway as your running legs develop. Good luck 👍

My first 5km was exactly 30 minutes¹, last August when I was 51. There's hope! 🤣

¹ I did sprain my ankle doing it, though.

It's always good to know 5k is still possible after a break, it's a great distance on its own or as a launching pad for longer runs. We'll done to you for going for it. Best wishes ☺️
