I managed to run my first 10k today. It wasn’t fast or pretty, but I made it.
My pace dropped right off in the second half of the run, and after 5 or 6 k I really felt like stopping. It was really hot outside today ☀️ , and I realised I’ve not had enough water this last few days.
What kept me going was thinking of those people who are the essential workers and also those people who can’t go out right now. So those are the folks who have to go out, and those who can’t go out. I’d like to dedicate my run to both those groups of people.
I decided to keep going one step at a time and slow down, and get to 7 k and then 1k at a time and just keep going
Next week is my 55th birthday on the 17th, I was keen to try and get to 10k by then ....so now it’s done.
Thanks very much to everyone on here for the wonderful encouragement and support. Without that I would not have achieved this.
Keep safe, and happy running. 🏃♂️🏃♀️👍

Congrats on your first 10K, first of many I am sure. Real grit and determination too! And a good time. 👏👏I wouldn't like to be running in that sort of temperature!
Ha ha, believe it!! You did it! I remember my first one too, I went for lunch after and kept saying "I've just run 10K", mostly to convince myself! It's a great feeling, a rite of passage. Congrats again xx
Congratulations on completing your first 10K, well done 😀 🏃🏾 🎓

Good for you, although I and everyone else can't go to parkruns as they are all off I have been running what I call a "a Virtual parkrun " every Saturday morning at 9.30, that is the time that parkruns are run in Scotland, not at my home parkrun park but just locally near to where I live, it's around a very scenic Scottish loch, this morning I ran a 5K in a time of 33.54, not a PB but happy that it was sub 35 minutes, have a happy Easter. 😊 🏃🏾
Well done. I have achieved 10k just after my 63rd birthday. My attitude has been just make a start and if you can't keep running just walk back. So far I have run every distance I intended to. The only person you have to beat is yourself.
Thank you very much. That sounds like sage advice indeed.
So true what you say about the only person to beat being yourself.
I was initially a little surprised that I found the going so tough after the first 5 or 6 k yesterday, but on reflection I think it was a combination of the heat and my lack of hydration. Like you, I have also so far run every distance I intended to .
