Blyth 10k race report, asthma is bad but I got around.

So since the Dalton Park 10k a month ago where I ran a PB I have managed just 2 runs as my asthma has flared up annoyingly and I seem unable to get on top of it. 3 nights ago it was so bad I considered calling an ambulance.

So it was with some trepidation I set off for Blyth today.

It was my first organised run this time a year ago, and it was there that cemented the running bug so I wanted to give it a go come what may.

I am in the middle of yet another course of prednisone and I hoped a large dose of pre race steroids and antihistamines would get me round. All in all I would probably have failed a drugs test at an Olympics πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

I arrived at Blyth Quayside to be greeted by thick fog but as we assembled the turnout looked a good one, bigger than last year.

We set off at 10 sharp, the first couple of kilometres are along quite a busy road but then you hit the coast at Blyth south beach before a 2.5km section on a paved path through the dunes to the half way point.

I set off fairly quick but managed to settle into a decent rhythm even though it was hard work.

At half way it's an about turn but you head home this time along the pavement rather than the dunes. It was a fairly lonely run back as I had no one within 50 yards of me either in front or behind. However I managed to keep going and all my splits were below 6.40 as I finished in 1 hour 6 mins, all in all very pleased with that.

A superbly organised event with loads of marshals showing you the way and offering encouragement as did many members of the public.

Really pleased I went and now I need to get on top of the asthma before the North Tyneside 10k in 2 weeks and the Sunderland Half marathon 3 weeks after that.

No bling going at this one but we got a nice technical T shirt.

Well done to everyone who has got out for a run this weekend, wheather at an organised event or not.

Run happy, run safe.

A good run for you today Chris, dispite some of your medical issues you ran it in a very good time.

Nice bit about the Olympics 😒if you had ran the 100 metres in record time with those pre race steroids and was then tested I think you would have been banned from running for a long time, however, in your case you are taking them for genuine medical reasons.

Well done. Fantastic running Chris, especially when you’re not at your best. I did my first ever 10k race in Lincoln today and in a PB of 1:05.

Sorry to hear you have been suffering lately Chris, but you were able to raise your game and push through for a great race today.

It must be a worry for you and knock your confidence a bit. Fingers crossed you feel some improvement ready for your upcoming challenges. Well done today.
