Hi,this is exactly what happened to me 3 weeks ago,in bed,the early hours and I awoke feeling unable to breath,it was frightening. For a week or more after I went to bed with the light on,actually,i was afraid to go to bed.I started to tell myself that nothing bad was going to happen,i had lots of tests at the hospital and all was well.I told myself it was in my head,i can go to bed again with the light off,i still feel anxious but not as bad, sometimes, like tonight I cant sleep so I get up again then try later, eventually it works,i sleep, not for too long but better than nothing.Keep telling yourself, nothing will happen,it helps, take care.
Hi Amzi
Well this is just another form of panic attack and the fear comes because you are now associating going to bed with the panicky feelings and so it repeats.
It can help to change your behaviour pattern at bedtime, not watching anything scary or worrying on tv before going to bed, keeping calm, maybe having a warm drink...some people find listening to calming music helpful...no tea or coffee for four hours before bed...listening to a relaxation cd can be very helpful too
All in all preparing yourself to be calm and warm and always remembering that thoughts are not real, they are just, thoughts and when we are tired or ffrightened we can forget that I know.
You can let go of,this fear, you really can...if it comes again get up and go into another room for a while until you feel sleepy.....please dont be annoyed with yourself, fear affects us all at times, mits a part of being human.....sleep well...warmest wishes
I have a fear of darkness. Dont no why but once i slept on the balcony of my holiday hotel for a fortnight. Its got better but i use a night light in the hall and halve a crack in the curtains to let street light in. If a feel panicky i take deep breaths. If that doesnt work i get up and walk around for a while. I dont take any drugs but i used kalms just before bed and they helped.
