Anxiety is making my life difficult

Hi,

I am a 26 year old man. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism in 2020, and was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and Dyspraxia as a child. I have always been of a nervous disposition, but since being diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, this has gone from being (generally) something that is managable, to something that is very difficult to manage. My GP considers this a mental health problem. What is certainly the case is that I need help. I have been struggling to go outside due to a mixture of light sensitivity and (an obviously ridiculous) anxiety around sunlight in my eye. I have recently become anxious about posture and gait while moving around the house, I have been a long term hypochondriac, etc, my muscles are now getting very tense which leaves me in pain, etc.) I had hoped that adequate treatment of my Thyroid would change things back to being managable, but in the absence of this so far, I need to find was to cope. I know that this is all irrational, and I try to manage it the best I can, but it is consuming me at the moment. It is also difficult since many of the symptoms I have been experiencing can be caused by the Thyroid and more general autoimmune conditions, but also anxiety (and the anxiety too can be both a cause in and of itself and caused by health issues). Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi ErraticAspie, I agree in that your Health Anxiety can be a cause in and of itself which is

caused by your health issues. However, I have found within my own life issues, that the

more stressed I would get, the worse my health issues would grow.

This can happen with chronic conditions as well as a passing headache. We have the power

within us to reduce pain levels through breathing and relaxation. It is imperative to reduce

our stress levels by finding methods that can work for you. Believe in that :) xx

I share your hypothyroidism and Asperger's diagnosis, I also have dyslexia which can interfere with my coordination. What I feel has helped me immensely is the Alexander Technique. Although there is a multitude of published books on this technique, hands on private lessons is the gold standard. The Alexander Technique is considered Alternative Healthcare in the states, and consequently is not covered by insurance companies here for the most part. So in the states at any rate cost can limit access.

Many Alexander Technique instructors are proficient in other areas too, such as dance, physical therapy, theater, etc., so many instructors breadth of knowledge can be substantial and worth out of pocket expenses. They have specialty organizations just as other healthcare providers do that can provide referrals.

I have recommended the Alexander Technique over the years to a number of people I know, but there have been no takers. They would rather suffer, but not I!

I found that thyroid, adrenals and hormones (low testosterone for me) can all cause or contribute to anxiety/depression so it's definitely worth making sure they are functioning properly. Also regarding thyroid testing most doctors do not know how to accurately test for thyroid and it's best to work with a functional medicine doctor or naturopath to get a full accurate test.

My primary issue has been anxiety with some OCD and not full OCD but I would suggest taking a look at the website and youtube videos of Mathew Codde, he had major OCD and healed himself and now helps others. I respect his work because he advocates acceptance which is the same way to deal with and heal anxiety. His website is: restoredminds.com/

hello there ! Don't worry you are not alone, many people suffered like you and me too..just that you have not discovered how to handle it...simply put Anxiety is with us from the time we came inro this world and it will stay indefinitely .So by and large just accept that it is a condition everyone needs to overcome to lead a better controlled life ..my more than 30 yrs experience with GAD ( general anxiety disorder ) is testimony to what i gonna convince you that it is normal to feel anxious but how to manage ? Well 1st there is no cure but one can eradicate 90% of it and leave with 10% which you will find acceptable and manageble..overtime u control it rather than it controls you ..the mind n body both plays a part in feeling great again..

i have suffered for over 20 yrs but the first 10yrs was tough

here is my ways of managing it

1.See a doctor or phychiayrist to get a clear view of what is happening ..i was prrscribed Xanax ..a wonderful anxiety drug ..that till today i find it the most powerful tool to help relieve attacks of anxiety bouts from time to time ..but you must understand hlw xanax works and side effects etc ..

2.eat well ,and daily exercise and meditation really is far more important than taking Xanax..now i carry xanax just a few tablets with me as a standby tool just in case my attacks are strong and when i am in publiclike big crowded places or going to a crowded markets as normally you will fear attackks maybe make you look weird and stupid to others ..of phobia of fainting ,dizzy etc ..dont worry xanax helps usually within 15 to 20 mins after taking you feel normal

to cut short over 20 yrs i tried to be on top of xanax meaning i control tsking it as it is addictive as when the effect wear off u need to take again as body n mind knows the xanax effects wear off ..so i discovered thst what xanax is doing is putting up a situation in your mind to create endorphin which really mskes one relax n calm so youdont get panic attacks ..so i found out how to create endorphin ..lots of exercise like jogging running n even all kind of sports .aft a gooc run your create natural endorphin so you feel relax n good ..i took up running at age 40 n i am still running few times a week 5to 8 km per run..also must take good rest like sleep well eat well n meditate ..yoga is good ..meet up with friends n note down all your anxiety attacks on paper look at it and tell yourself you gonna cut down attacks ..sjmple more exercise and less worry ..but keep xanax as standy back up n overtime you will be the boss to control xanax..now i no longer take xanax as perscribed daily .i carry as my good buddy sometimes 5 tablets for a year i only use one or two tables n no longer need one tablet just a tiny quarter of ond tablet works ..so i must say i got out of it well .you must believe you can overcome attacks which will come n go

so all the best n dont worry anxiety is always there but you must stay on top of it znd control it .dont let it control you.

cheers !

I am right there with you. I am hypothyroid and after 6yrs of trying the addition of T3, I am still not right. Have you tested for Hashimoto's as they usually come hand in hand. My anxiety is through the roof like I have a double whammy of it as I have fought anxiety since childhood and am 60 now. I will guarantee you 100% that your GP has no idea about your thyroid, none of them really do and they never do the right tests. May I suggested you go directly to this group, they are amazing and knowledgable people.
