B12 level is too high?

Last week I have my levels checked, including B12. The result is higher than normal, around 1100. I don't understand what it means, but doctor only suggested me not to take any supplements. For the past 4 months I've taken supplement B12 methylcobalamin, could it be that I've overconsumed B12 vit? I do eat meat fruit veg daily, but not much red meat. It's the first time I have vitamin levels checked cause I thought I might have deficiency. I'm worried cause Google told me it could mean something serious, health risk, life threatening conditions, ... 😩 Anyone has the same issues?

Most people if they eat a healthy diet, and it sounds like you do don't need supplements. Overuse can be just as bad as being deficient. I would advise you to follow your doctors advice and stop taking vitamin B12.

I think I develope health anxiety lately. I do have undiagnosed symptoms and it just makes me worried. So if this level indicates something bad, I would get worried. I just have no appetite now to eat.

You haven't done yourself any harm so just follow the doctors instructions. Carry on with your normal healthy diet and be grateful you don't have any illness which can cause any vitamin deficiency.

Health anxiety can produce many physical symptoms as your mind and body are interlinked so google those. Don't use Dr Google though as you will go from a mild headache to dead in 3 clicks!

How much vit b12 have you been taking?

First 3 months only methylcobalamin 500mcg 2x daily. Then I went to a functional doctor and for the last 1 month I took B6-9-12 (B12 1000mcg) 2x daily.

There's a forum on here Pernicious anaemia society, heaps of great advice for B12 related, maybe join and post this there, 2000mcg daily for last month does seem high but im told we cannot overdose on b12 as the body gets rid of excess, when you do retest b12 at some point get active b12 and total b12 tested, looking at your b12 level I would say this is total and active can tell more.

I'm not sure if it's total, I'll check with doctor. If I never get checked, I would never know. I'm having undiagnosed symptoms for months, still trying to put together these puzzle pieces. 😞

The test you had was serum - or total B12.The supplements you are taking are the most likely cause of the high levels of B12 in your blood. They are over 100x RDA for B12 and although the body has some mechanisms to stop levels building up the doses you are taking by-pass that mechanism which will have resulted in the build up in your blood.

For some people it can take a long time for levels to fall after they have built up to those levels.

Dr Google can be very scary in relation to high B12 - but the reality is that high B12 doesn't cause cancer or any problems like that but it can be caused by cancer and liver problems - though the doses you have been supplementing are going to be the cause of the high levels you are showing and unlikely to be masking another problem.

This is a link to the PASoc Forum mentioned by sbadd but the forum is really intended to support people who have problems absorbing B12 from their diet and you are not in that category

Suggest that you consult a pharmacist in future about what supplements might be appropriate for you.

Oh my.. I never realized I took too much. Thank you for calming my worry heart. A functional doctor gave me and she told me other patients had no issues. My other tests are normal incl. liver function, renal, glucose, ferritin, iron, transferin, vit D, etc. Gastroenterologist didn't worry and asked me to stop taking any supplements and see in 2 weeks time how my level is. It really freaked me out, especially since last few days I started to have stomach issues. It's not specific and not painful, but discomfort around my chest and upper abdomen. I feel so full, since yesterday I just have no appetite to eat normal portions. Doctor gave me Maalox antacid, haven't tried it yet. So afraid with medicines, so far I'm very sensitive with whatever doctors gave me, always resulted in side effects.
