Massive inhale/gasp for air

I don’t know how to explain this but throughout the day I will just be sitting there and then every now and then I will have to take a massive gasp for air. It makes the sound of a sigh but it happens a lot and in my head I imagine having a massive thud in my chest once it’s done. I never have a massive thud but I always worry about it happening which makes me more scared of my heart stopping. I recently had my 20/30th ecg and they come back fine along with bloods. I’m really really low at the moment and I don’t know why. What is this symptom and what can it be. Any help would massive help a young English man sleep tonight.

This might sound silly, but are you just not breathing? I swear I’ll forget to breathe sometimes. Sighing is also a symptom of anxiety/stress/depression. I learned that recently. Found it interesting because I sigh a lot. Be more aware of your breathing from now on, make sure you’re not breathing too shallowly.

There's a really good article about this at anxiety.org

Do a search for "Sighing"

Thanks. I looked into this. Offered some reassurance. Do you do it a lot?

Off and on depending on my level of anxiety. Knowing that it's a normal reaction to over-breathing, I hardly ever pay attention to it anymore. I hope the same for you as well.

Callie is right, Sandy in that we sometimes just forget to breathe and our bodies

make up for it by allowing us to sigh which in turn gives that massive gasp for air.

It happens to me as well when I'm under stress. Not to worry. It's okay.

Get it all the time. I don’t mind it actually. It’s like a big sigh.
