Thanks for that. I have just joined too. There are lots of great courses on futurelearn and I have done a few of them before. They are all free unless you choose to upgrade. x

Yes I’ve done a few also, I tend not to upgrade though as it’s expensive. I’m in the last year of an honours degree also so I haven’t done so many lately.

Oh I did an Honours degree way back in the 80's. Mine was in the Social Sciences. What is your in? x

in reply to hypercat54

I’ve completed a foundation degree in Social Care Practice and my honours degree top up is Applied Care Practice specialising in mental health

Wow that's great. What kind of career will this lead to? x

in reply to hypercat54

I already work in a court but I would also like to work with children as a mental health support worker in schools. That role isn’t yet available but there has been a green paper so it should be in the next few years.

Good for you. There might be other avenues open to you as well once you have got your degree. x

in reply to hypercat54

Yes hopefully. Though I do like my current job. X

I must admit when I got my degree as it was a more general one I could have done a years training to be either a teacher or social worker. I didn't fancy either of those so went back to my previous typing/admin jobs which I liked.

My degree has absolutely helped me get work though and I learnt that a lot of the value of education isn't so much what you learn, but being able to think properly and clearly and make good choices.

My depression has made me need to live a less complex and more simple life and I always envy those who undertake careers. x

in reply to hypercat54

That’s exactly how I feel. I could do the same, teacher training, social work etc but I do not want the pressure and responsibility which comes with those jobs. I manage a small team and I enjoy it.

I have learnt many skills, plus gained knowledge and confidence. I would recommend a degree to anyone. X

I am old and left school at 15 thinking I was a failure and a bit thick. I did go back to school at evening class and to my surprise got 3 'O' levels. Not much to many but a revelation to me.

Getting my degree put my mind at rest that I was actually quite bright and intelligent and has had a major positive effect on my life. :) x

Thanks for the tip about the free classes. I'll definitely check it out. I have my BA in behavioral science. I graduated at the top of my class in 97. But I was a wreck getting there. It took me 9 years to finish half-time. But I was also taking care of my young autistic son who was having learning problems in school. It takes lots of time and patience to finish any classes.
