Advice for help

I’m struggling to find a new therapist. My former therapist no longer takes my insurance and I cant afford the $140 a session. I’m wondering what type of practitioner would be the best fit for me. I’m struggling with anxiety and feel like I need weekly visits and would like to focus on CBT, mindfulness, meditation, tapping, etc. Should I look for a therapist or psychologist? I just feel like I need someone who is going to teach me techniques to reduce and limit my anxiety.

Hi jmf,

I see a psychologist. So he can not prescribe me medications but that’s fine because I don’t want them. He does have a psychiatrist in the office that I can meet with if I choose but at this time we are just doing CBT. Also I bought the “calm” app for my phone and it has great mediation sessions that you can listen to over and over and new ones daily. All of them you can download to your phone so in case you don’t have WiFi or whatever you can still access them. Chin up, find a way to make it work. The days will go by anyway, might as well work on getting you better. Good luck.

I would suggest trying to find a therapist or center that specifically treats anxiety disorder who can provide you with the knowledge and tools for coping and recovery. My own personal experience with therapists is that the general therapists/psychologists are ineffective at treating anxiety disorder. Talk therapy is only beneficial because it feels good to have someone to confide in but it is not effective in overcoming anxiety disorder. I've also read that group therapy is especially helpful for anxiety disorder, although I have not experienced it myself because of unavailability in my area. I would suggest spending some time on line reviewing the websites of therapist in your area.

I agree. I have been in therapy for years and I have never actually received tools or tips and tricks. I want someone who will walk me through practices and techniques rather than give me handouts and book suggestions.
