Dentist Phobia

I have an extreme dislike of going to the dentist. But I always force myself to go because it's just one of those things you have to do. Until my last appt a few months ago.... I literally ran from the dentist office and drove straight home! I let my fear and anxiety take over. I'm so embarrassed by my behavior! That I'm hesitant to call them up for another (much needed) appt. Im actually thinking of changing dentist to spare myself the humiliation. Is that the thing to do? Or should i bite the bullett and go back to my original dentist?

I know how completely childish this sounds.

Hi

Don't be embarrassed , your not alone !

Phone your dentist and explain ,a good caring dentist and staff will understand and come across lots of patients like you .

My own dentist has patients like you .

One patient hastily gave their hand held through out treatment ,another fears coming in and receptionist goes accords the road and helps the patient in , others phone up frightened to make appointment fir treatment but lots of understanding and help given .

If you get understanding and help when you phone your dentist back for another appointment then go back .If no understanding is given then find a dentist that will help you through your fear .

Don't give up , help is out there and you are truly not alone xx

Good luck

Ps booking last appointment before they close for lunch or last appointment of the day might help you when no one else is waiting might help or possibly first appointment of the day or first after lunch .

Just a thought xx

Hi Sunontheice, I agree with Dubba61 in trying online hypnosis before you go. If you have time before the next appointment, I would suggest listening to the hypnosis video several times a day until the appointment time.

I use self hypnosis myself by transporting myself to another place in time. If it's a long appointment, I ask for a break time where I could get up and walk around or use the restroom. Moving the muscles helps to loosen and relax them.

Also making sure that the dentist uses only plain Novocain called Carbo. It doesn't have the epinephrine in it that can cause heart skips and anxiety. Wishing you well. You can do this xx

Thank you Agora, I actually did hypnosis therapy for two years to get rid of my anxiety and racing thoughts. Sadly it didn't help. I'm afraid I may be one of those people who are to broken, to ever be fixed. I hate it, but I've accepted it.

I'm sorry Sunontheice that hypnosis didn't work but that doesn't mean you are too broken to fix. It just means you haven't found the tool that may work for you yet. Don't give up, something out there is waiting for you to try and has your name on it. :)

We are here to help you through. xx

Hello Sun, not childish at all. No one likes going to the Dentist. I did a runner once too. We weren't the first n definitely won't be the last to do it! 😊 I would say if you're Dentist is good, then go back to him. If not, get a new one. Try some of the online hypnosis before you go, as they're very calming. Also, Yoga n Tai- Chi help, n not just at the time your doing them. N do go, theres nothing Uglier than a mouthful of bad teeth! Best of luck 😊✌️🌻

Dubba61, you are so right about having a mouthful of bad teeth. That would be awful. And it's a great incentive to keep seeing my dentist.

It is! Sun. And someone told me to take 2 Paracetamol n a ibuprofen, an hour before you go. Helps. You be calm n takes the pain off a little. I have no choice but to go, because I have Osteopenia which can affect your Teeth. Can't say i like it,.but it's soon over ay? Have a good day/night whatever it is where you are. 😊👍🌻
