Cactus juice from Patagonia is not going to cure you of anxiety.

Neither is the aroma of Siberian daffodils or capsules of New Zealand GreenLipped mussel powder. Sorry to cast a discordant note but those of us who experience high anxiety are very suggestable and eager for a quick fix that will get us back to normality. But magnesium pills, listening to recordings of waves breaking on the shore and taking vitamins D and K won't make an iota of difference to your anxiety levels and certainly won't effect your recovery.

This is because none if these weird and wonderful remedies have any effect whatsoever on the thing that's causing anxiety. And that's the fact that your nervous system has become over sensitised and that sensitivity is being maintained by the fear you flood your nerves with every time you feel panic or have a bad feeling or worrying thought.

There is only one thing that cures over sensitised nerves and it certainly isn't an instant fix. And that's something that stops you producing the hormone of fear - learning to accept for the time being the irritating symptoms of anxiety instead of constantly fighting them.

There are many modern self-help books written by contemporary writers that base their therapy on Acceptance in some form. They all take their lead from a woman who first developed the Acceptance method and first published a book on the subject 55 years ago. Since that first book it has been estimated by Wikipedia that hundreds of thousands of people have recovered from anxiety disorder - yet her name is almost entirely unknown among modern day psychiatrists who have in my opinion a lamentable record of success in curing anxiety neurosis.

For those who's dreams and beliefs have helped their anxiety, nothing Jeff1943 says should change that. Please be strong in your convictions that what you do, or use works for you.

Only one, the Acceptance method first described by Doctor Claire Weekes in 1962 in her first book 'Self help for your nerves' (u.k. edition) also known as 'Hope and help for your nerves' (u.s. edition) both republished many times down to the modern day and both available from Amazon. Of the hundreds of reader reviews listed about 95% rate the book Very Good or Excellent and the phrase 'saved my life' crops up regularly in these Amazon reviews.

Jeff1942, for me, I always wonder what the thought was that set me off in the first place. Thoughts?

Green Tea and Lemon Balm (Verbama) are centuries old remedies that bring relief from anxiety for some but not cure. Also the root of the rawawulfa plant that grows in India is an effective reliever of anxiety (Diazepam was synthesised from this age old Indian remedy) but once again only brings short term relief not cure.

kevoreally profile image
kevoreally in reply to Jeff1943

No but it allows you to desenstiize enough to go chase your fears and bite them in the arse and to get to the ROOT CAUSE which in solely is the TRUE PROBLEM

Jeff1943 profile image
Jeff1943 in reply to kevoreally

Modern psychiatry, which is an infant science, is always looking for some traumatic root cause that happened in our childhood to account for our anxiety disorder. Claire Weekes challenges this method as a waste of time, for most people the root causes are worry, stress, overwork, diasappointment and disgrace (hopefully not all at the same time).

Her books have been mildly criticised because she wrote them when social practices were different from today and claim this makes them old fashioned. However the fact that the Bible was written 2000 years ago and the Qu'uaran 1400 years ago never put off the millions who subscribe to their teachings.

😂😂😂

Damn that eggshell powder from the brown echidna was so bloody expensive and the juice of a worry warts tears tastes like crap - you're telling me it doesn't work?!?!?!? 😲😲😲😲

But wait, surely checking my pulse 75 times a day will help? Seeing the Doctor for the 5th time straight will no doubt find that I have a previously undetected condition....won't it?

Not making fun of true agony that people go through, but the solution is here. And yes not going to make big pharma any money but it will lead to recovery. Accept, allow, float, let time pass.

Yes Vbee, Accept - Float - And let time pass, the holy mantra of Saint Claire.

I'm doing work with a trauma therapist here in town, and she has " demanded" that I test myself now. Said to flex the," I'm OK muscle" and put myself into situations that make me uncomfortable. So I get to use what I learn from all of the venues. Clair Weeks , distraction, accepting of the " trauma soup" that she calls it. That surge of adrenaline that drops and makes me feel all freaked out.............So, Ive been doing "field work". xoxo

guess what? I haven't puked, died, flopped around like a fish out of water, fainted ( which you can not physically do during anxiety) or run screaming from my car whilst in bumper to bumper traffic with my hair on fire. { altho, that one is forever on my mind} YET

kevoreally profile image
kevoreally in reply to Indigojoe

How do you get enough courage built up to do this "field work" as putting yourself in the uncomfortable spots for me my uncomfy spots make me worry im gonna die so i never throw myself too far into the field..

Jeff1943 profile image
Jeff1943 in reply to kevoreally

You can't die, kevoreally, the power of anxiety is limited, it cannot kill you, disable you or send you crazy, it can only frighten us. Some people think anxiety will give you a heart attack but heart attacks are caused by eating too much saturated fat and clogging our arteries and not by anxiety. Claire Weekes said that people who experience anxiety are among the bravest people there are, we have to be I suppose to survive.

I can sympathise with what Indigo says, only by putting ourselves in uncomfortable positions can we practice acceptance. We have to place ourself in harm's way. Twice I had very bad anxiety whilst on holiday at a certain seaside resort and came home early. This year I went back, practiced acceptance and stayed the full 7 days. I did get a black mark in the vision of one eye but I knew it was anxiety, I had had it before and knew that it would resolve so I felt no fear and didn't stress about it. 5 weeks later I thought to myself 'Where's that black mark, it's gone?' I had denied it the oxygen of fear so it died of neglect! Yes, sometimes we must travel outside our comfort zone to practice acceptance and floating and letting time pass. Do what you fear and the death of fear is assured, so spoke the great American philosopher Norman Vincent Peale.

Visual disturbances are among the lesser known symptoms of anxiety and can include, shimmering, tunnel vision, scintilating scotomata (the visual disturbance that ofter prequels migraine but I don't get the migraine) and black marks seen when you look at a white surface or cloud and squeeze your eye, I have personally named this latter symptom Sky Blinkers Syndrome☺ All harmless tricks our over sensitised nervous system plays on us which if you don't know why it is happening and that it's benign causes bewilderment, fear and panic.

I think you would get so much from The DARE Response by Barry McDonagh. It is based on the Claire Weekes teachings but with super awesome steps D Diffuse, A Allow and Accept, R Run towards the sensations and E Engage fully. I have been reading and listening to Claire Weekes but this is the next step up that I am finding so much progress. Their Facebook support pages are also the most amazing positive feedback forums and the mods are all very very helpful and sympathetic. YouTube him first for the free stuff. 👍😎

I have read much about the DARE method which seems to be a development of Claire Weekes' method. I must read this book.

Another great post Jeff1943.

The only thing I did to overcome anxiety was to change my attitude towards the symptoms and lose my fear of them. I learnt that all those remedies were used for one thing. To not feel anxiety and that this would only bring temporary relief at best. Permanent cure lies in coping with anxiety the right way through acceptance. It means you won’t be looking over your shoulder worrying if it will return because you won’t fear it so it doesnt matter.

I also learnt that the anxiety was just as keen to leave me but I wasn’t letting it go because I kept fighting it instead of accepting it. How can you escape from anxiety when you are not prepared to release it by feeling it? It is just negative energy stored up over a period of time which wants to be released as much as a sufferer wants to get rid of it but the natural instinct is to suppress, avoid or trying to stop it being released because it makes us feel bad. The negative energy has nowhere to go so the sufferer keeps on suffering. This is why acceptance works because it means you are allowing all that negative energy (e.g. bad thoughts, depersonalisation, depression to name a few symptoms) to escape without putting up any resistance. Once all that excessive energy is used up, peace of mind and body returns. A quick way of seeing this is through rigourous exercise and burning up excessive energy. You feel relaxed afterwards. Acceptance will provide the same results, permanently.

Nowadays, i drink more caffeine and my sweet tooth is sweeter than ever 🍰🍪🍩. Anxiety didn’t stop me from doing anything no matter how I felt but it took time to develop the right attitude and stop caring about how I felt or worrying about the intrusive thoughts.

To an extent, you are right, Jeff. However, more and more literature is coming out about how much our hormones and physical health/diet play in the role of our anxiety. Of course there is not quick fix, however, making certain that your body is all around healthy is extremely important. If someone is drinking a ton of coffee, eating sugary foods, refined white carbs, smoking, drinking alcohol- of course they are going to be more anxious. I, for example, get the worst of all my panic attacks on certain days of my monthly cycle. It happens like clockwork. I am trying to balance my hormones because I have hormonal problems which exacerbate my anxiety. There are health conditions that can mimic anxiety and depression- thyroid dysfunction, lack of B6, estrogen dominance in women, insulin resistance- all of which I have... I notice that when I am on top of my health problems, my anxiety is less. I suggest to everyone to read the book by Trudy Scott, The Anti-anxiety Food Solution: How the Foods you Eat can Help you Calm your Anxious Mind.

I would say do this IN ADDITION TO RELYING ON CLAIRE WEEKES.

Best to all

Jeff1943 profile image
Jeff1943 in reply to carolyn982

I accept what you say here carolyn982, I am aware of the thyroid cennection, B6 and my first anxiety episode was precipitated by too much strong coffee. What I was trying to say here was that you often see miracle cures for anxiety being advocated which give the impression that all you have to do is take some obscure substance and all will be well.

It would be intetesting to know exactly how many people with anxiety disorder have it because their bodies produce too much or too little of some hormone. Probably more than we realise.
