No you are not alone! You have to redirect your thinking, do the 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can feel, 2 things you can taste and 1 thing you can smell.
If your still anxious do it again. Keep busy with something to do. We tend to sit and worry and that just makes matters worse.
Hang in there
I actually had this happen to me a few nights ago, and I couldn't get to sleep. The thing you need to do is to distract your brain with actions that can either immerse it completely or require it to multitask. I've learned that if I'm chewing something, whether it be a stick of gum or food, my brain focuses on that rather than my breathing and then it becomes an unconscious act again. Reading an engrossing book also helps, or playing a video game.
Try to remember that no matter what, you won't die. The worst case scenario is that you'd pass out, but even then you'll start breathing normally regardless.
Stay strong! It's annoying, but you can pull through.
Another good trick is to sing. Put your favourite music on and sing along to it.... I used to do it whilst I was driving etc.
When you sing, you have to breath normally.
Try not to keep gulping to get a deep breath, breath as shallowly as you like.
This happened to be when depersonalization/derealization started. I would catch myself holding my breath and feeling like I couldn't breath but I was. That will slowly fade away when you stop focusing on your breath
