Betty30, many people find that their anxiety and depression are worse first thing in the morning. The only suggestion I've heard to account for this is connected with the 'fight or flight' hormone Cortisol which our body releases and which peaks at 8am in the morning. This was fine hundreds/thousands of years ago when a day's work involved fight or flight but in today's lifestyle we don't need the extra cortisol on waking up as the chances of being chased by a dinosaur are slim. So the cortisol sloshes about in our bodies unused and causes the bad feelings.

There is an antidote to cortisol in green tea called L-thianine so you may find it worthwhile to have a cup of green tea first thing on waking. I find it helps. I've also tries green tea in tablet form (10mg Thiamine) and also pure L-Thianine tablets (200mg) but didn't find them effective but maybe didn't give them a fair chance so I'm going to try the latter again.

So what I'm saying is that a packet of green tea bags from you local supermarket are maybe worth a try.

There are many anti depressants and tranquillisers but although they're helpful for short term relief the best solution is to free yourself of anxiety (and the depression that comes out of anxiety) by reading a goof self help book like 'Self help with your nerves' by Doctor Claire Weekes. This advocates recovery through Accepting the symptoms of anxiety for the time being instead of fighting them which causes more tension and stress for our already over sensitised nervous system. I commend this book to you which is available through Amazon, it has greatly helped untold thousands of people over the years.

Thank you so much, Jeff... I think we are coming from pretty much the same place--as to how we look at things... I actually bought that book by Claire Weekes! Loaned it to someone--never got it back! :/ Just been going through a really 'bad spell' lately...haven't been meditating like I should (which is a way of acceptance, too, eh?) So, using my intentions, I went to the Dr with the attitude that my good Intentions to help me to say and do the right things... So instead of fighting him on an Rx he suggested, I found myself thinking and saying 'this is what to do...' so will give the Celexa a go... knowing the beginning side effects, and all... BUT it IS a 'crutch' for now...NOT an 'answer'...but I truly DO agree with you... its all 'within'... and oh YES, I have been 'fighting it' :) hadn't even realized that til a couple of days ago... So thank you again. :)

Hi Betty30, I have tried it all over the years and the thing that works best for me is deep breathing and audio meditation tapes. I use it before bed, in the doctor or dentist office as well as every morning as soon as I open my eyes. It helps calm down the morning anxiety. During the afternoon, I tune into YouTube and listen to a 10min audio video of Sinking & Slowing Breathing Meditation. Wishing you well!
