Hi I am new to this and have just joined, i am having a Laparoscopy operation in 8 weeks andfeel anxious and nervous.
HI Danielle and Welcome x I can understand that at this moment in time, you are feeling very nervous and anxious about your operation. This is completely normal and I would imagine most people feel exactly the same way before any surgery. Keyhole surgery is a less intrusive type and has quicker healing times etc so before you know it you will be back on your feet. Do you suffer from anxiety on a long term basis? If so maybe you could chat with the nurses/doctor beforehand about it and they could put your mind at ease. If its general anxiety about the operation, as I say its to be expected, but try not to dwell on it to much, it will be fine x DOnver x
Hi DONVER22 thanks for the reassurance. I get it daily and sometimes the headaches too, my belly feels in knots about it at the moment and I cant eat as much as I normally do, is that just because of nerves.
Anxiety in general is the flight/fight response that the body sends out because you start to feel agitated or nervous. There is not always a danger its important to remember this, but as we feel more and more nervous the mind tricks the body into believing there defiantly is. The adrenalin will start to whirl the heart will beat faster and the body is ready to defend. Your stomach will feel nervous and knotted as your body wants to empty your system to make running easier. The headaches can occur due to the increase of pumping blood and the bp going up slightly. Your body tells you not to eat, in case it needs to go fast x Its all part of the complex system of anxiety, but it peaks at around 5 mins max and then goes . The best way is to try and keep calm, and try some breathing exercises. Yoga can be very good to. I would recommend going to see your doctor as if the anxiety continues after your operation and remains high, there are lots of things that can be done, from medication to therapy x Donver x
Hello Daniel. I had this surgery on my knee three years ago after a bad cycling accident.. It was a very quick healing process as well (it was for me). I watched the whole thing on a TV monitor.. I was sedated at the time.. but still conscious. If your having a nervous stomach maybe try Gravol ( sic) It helps with nervous stomach etc..Good luck and keep posting.. let us know how it all goes...GB steve
Hi Donver. There is a great article on the Brain in National Geographic. I saw it at the Doc`s office yesterday So I am not sure if it was this months but I think it may have been. steve
HI Steve x Oh I will have to have a look online x If you can ? Im not sure if and where you can buy the national geo here x Maybe you could take some tips and do a post to help others ? We do like anything that shows how the brain and anxiety etc are related x Donver x
Thanks for your replies, very helpful and makes me understand why my body is like this. x
Hi Danielle and welcome,
As Donver said it's only natural to need anxious and nervous before your op.
Does sound to me as if you do have some anxiety also,I get times when I can't eat, feel shaky and tum in knots.Do try the deep breathing Donver mentioned,I find it helps.
Please let us know how things go with you.Anne xxx
Thanks Lowtongirl I will do. xx
Hi Danielle welcome
I have endometrosis and have had a laparoscopy and a laparotomy at they same time for a cyst. Don't worry you will be absolutely fine. It is a fairly straightforward operation to diagnose or treat in my case endometrosis. They put a camera through your bellybutton into your abdomen and pump air into into it so they can see your organs clearly. Remember surgeons do many hundreds if not thousands of these ops every year without any problems. Good luck xxx
Aww thanks angelofhope, I am having a salpingectomy to remove a fallopian tube before I have my next IVF. xx
hi a laparoscopic operation simply 3 stitches. You did not say what operation you are having. I have had 32 surgeries but who is counting .tell me the operation I am sure I can comfort you
Hi motherrathbone. I am having a Laparoscopy key hole surgery to remove a fallopian tube.
Take a book with you x the wait is so boring
I had to be at the hospital at 1pm and didn't go to OR till 6pm and I was bored to tears x
I was a nervous wreck before mine but as they walked me to OR I relaxed and had banter with the nurses x you close your eyes and wake up as if no time has passed x you may be drowsy after GA but it passes I wasn't and the nurses didn't even put me in a recovery ward because I woke up still in OR and chatted to them all like I'd not had anything done at all x
Recovery is fast but I won't talk about my lap but others close to me have had it done and they were both outside smoking within 20 minutes of waking x
Try relaxing with some music when you start feeling apprehensive about the op or go see a friend or take a relaxing bath x it's what I did when I started getting nervous over the op x
Let us know how you get on
