Hi everyone. I’m a survivor of a traumatic childhood. And over the years, have been in private and group therapy(typical). With a little success . I’m reading the book the body keeps the score. In it, the author talks about emdr and neurofeedback and some other things I have not tried. But I don’t know what to do. My childhood had trauma in it but it created more of a general anxiety disorder based on fear. There were some traumatic events though but non sexual.

I myself have not tried it too much, though even before reading about the 8 phases to go through I think I was doing it all ready. Though for me doing it alone isn't has helpful as walking through the phases in groups or with another person preferably someone all ready experienced or qualified to walk you through the process. Even working on it alone is better than doing nothing, so I'm thinking you are further along than you think. A practice partner would be good. Are you looking for that or just advice?
The 8 phases of what? How do I do it alone? Thanx
I was only referring to EMDR, as far as Neurofeedback. I haven't done that in a while. Back to EMDR, I'm still a novice, but it sounds like a qualified therapist is best. Myself I tend to want to self heal if I can, hence I haven't tried getting a professional clinician to help go me through the steps. I have just read the overview of it on a website for the Cleveland Clinic.

What I am reading seems like a quick summary of what you maybe reading. Let me know your thoughts.
What I’ve read says that emdr is better for people working on one traumatic event. Not so great with generalized childhood issues. But who knows for sure. Thankyou
Hello and Welcome. I have done a type of Neurofeedback called LENS Neurofeedback (Low Electricity Neurofeedback Systems). I have had some success with it. It is not widely available in all areas. In my area there is only one practitioner and he is only here 6 months out of the year. If you search and find it available in your area and if you are interested, I would be happy to share my experience with you. It is not covered by insurance I have to pay out of pocket. There are other people here who have had success with EMDR. Hopefully they will see your post and respond. There are so many good people here and so much good information. I am happy you found us.
Have had emdr and it helped me a lot😁
I am starting to look at my childhood to trace where my overwhelming empathy comes from. I'll take a look at that book.
I worked with a lot of different therapists and then realized that what I was dealing with was c-ptsd caused be growing up in an emotionally abusive household with a lot of shaming. I was also bullied in school. I found a therapist that specialized in treating trauma/c-ptsd, he used emdr as part of the therapy and it really helped me heal. I had tried emdr with a general therapist before but it wasn't successful, working with the trauma therapist made the difference.
Thankyou. Did you go in office for the visits and what city is he in? Thanx
Yes I did go into his office and his office is in Bend Oregon which is in the central part of the state. You might try finding one near you through the psychologytoday.com website assuming you live in the US.
Yes I’m in the US. IVE never had the feeling that it’s easy to find a good therapist. BTW, have you ever had any issues with noises? What I mean is that if the guy next door to mine is playing loud music, then I feel unsafe . But if the noise is not in my living area, I’m ok. Sound itself doesn’t bother unless it intrudes on my living space.
Yes, it's because it activates your threat response which is probably on high alert from previous unhealed/unprocessed trauma. Working with a good trauma therapist using emdr will help you process the emotions and heal so you are less sensitive and triggered.
did you ever try 12 step groups? They didn’t do a lot for me
No i haven't, I use to drink to where I blacked out a few times and realized I needed to only drink in moderation so alcohol never has become a problem for me.
