Dentist/Root canal

hey guys. I had the dentist yesterday and they told me I needed root canal on my lower back tooth. I’ve never had any fillings ect from the dentist so didn’t know what to expect. Anyway, they injected my mouth twice and I didn’t feel fully numb so they done another 2 injections which they said was the max numbing they could use. They then started drilling said tooth and MY god I could feel everything!!!! I felt so bad having to get them to stop and start but it was honestly so painful and sensitive. They were looking at me funny telling me I should be numb. They then said ok we can’t go any further and put a filling in the tooth with anti inflammatory medicine? And prescribed me antibiotics for 5 days? Has anyone else had an experience like this? My entire face and tongue were numb for a good 3/4 hours but I felt like I could feel everything when they were drilling! Not just pressure, actual pain 😩

I'm a dental phenomenon, literally. I am genetically predisposed for bleeding gums and cavities. I have a crazy brushing routine, but really doesn't seem to matter. I have had 5 root canals done and all four front teeth are fake. I am about to have them all extracted due to bone loss. Anyway, I had some cavities filled a few months ago and one tooth they said needed just a crown. I too take a lot of numbing for it to work on my end. Now the tooth with the crown needs a root canal. I can say it is totally normal to be numb even beyond 4 hours. Yes it's a pain in the butt, but I'd rather be numbed up as much as possible.

There is a link below to what they did and how they used the anti inflammatory filling. It's essentially a stop gap to control pain. It could mean it gives you some time, but suspect the root canal need will pop up again if pain returns. I was totally bummed when my crown turned into needing a root canal. They did the right thing given the circumstances in my non professional opinion. The antibiotics are usually a good idea because they did do some drilling and something is causing the pain to require the root canal. I've been given antibiotics after most heavy dental procedures. Usually a short three day course though.

You may want to explore conscious sedation. I see a dentist that does this but I haven't used sedation quite yet. For the extractions I have and bone to build back, I have to actually be at a hospital and put under. THANKFUL for that. I have heard from folks who have done the sedation...and they lost their fears of the dentist. My sister included who is a doctor! She hadn't gone to the dentist in over 20 years! Some places try to charge you like crazy out of pocket, but I have found mine to be reasonable. To be fully sedated, they are charge $100 flat fee for as long as you procedure takes. I have about 12 tiny cavities due to dry mouth and sleeping as a mouth breather. I asked for sedation and if the fee was still low given how much work and they said yes. I think they prefer the patient to be sedated!

Wishing you some pain free time today! Truly hoping!

thank you for such a lengthy reply! I really do appreciate it! It’s not so much a fear on my end more so I could genuinely just feel the pain when they were drilling even after the max dosage of numbing ☹️ I’ve had my back tooth taken out before and that was no problem! Didn’t feel a thing! I struggle as is with health anxiety and being put to sleep is a huge trigger for me. I think I would have been able to manage the pain if they had done it in little bits, like given me a break inbetween drilling but it felt so rushed like they just wanted me out of there 😭 today the numbness has gone just a bit tender where I was jagged, I have a bit of a funny tummy though, could be a coincidence, just my luck!!!

I have been prescribed a benzo before a long treatment in the past as well. Not sure if that would help just to see how if lowering your anxiety can help a bit. I totally understand all of it. Oral health is so important. However, repeated trips to the dentist can get old fast. I'm so sorry I mentioned sedation. I too have a massive phobia going under and I do have two upcoming surgeries that I'll be put out. For the dentist though, it isn't like being put under, it's literally a benzo shot! They can't have you fully asleep usually to be able to work with you. I can just imagine falling out of the dental chair and drooling all over if we were put out in the dental chair! They would have to strap me in, but I did sign up to try it for all 12 cavities at once. Gettin' it done. I too get a little sensitive where they put the local anesthetic for a few days, but it will return to normal. Adding dental work on a list of to dos.....I always end up there last!
