Yesterday my sweet dog trotted across the backyard with a bird in her mouth. I picked her up and told her to drop it. The bird landed on the ground with a quiet thump, still alive, somewhat.
I took my dog inside and told her "no," gently because she's a dog and going after a bird is in her nature.
I pondered putting the bird out of its misery but just couldn't face it. I put a note on the backdoor to remind me to pick up the dead bird before letting the dogs out again.
Later when I went out to do that, the bird was gone.
Don't assume the worst. Give healing a chance.

So nice. I had a similar experience with a small green frog that seemed to be overcome by heat. I made some shade for him and misted him with cool water. After an hour he hopped away.
Sounds like a wonderful dog you have and I have had the same experience and totally agree. We have big windows on our house and have birds occasionally fly into them and fall to the ground. I've learned anymore to let them be or even move them to a safe area wearing gloves and eventually they regain their senses and fly away, they were stunned but not dead thankfully.
