Caught on the karmic wheel

Nothing_but_books profile image

I dunno... Trigger warning maybe? Boo-boos.

I woke a little focused today and I've been able to get some things done that bother me.

Really high heat and humidity, but even so, my pain is lower than usual.

I was working in my bedroom when I suddenly heard high-pitched screaming outside my kitchen window. Ran and looked out: there's a huge calico cat at the edge of my driveway hunched over a teeny, dark, shrieking blob.

"Get out of there you S.O.*!!!" There's a crazy me banging on the window frame.

I ran outside to the back. Ya... funny huh. No cane, nada. Me, running. Ha.

Got there and screamed at that creature. The so-and-so took one look at me and high-tailed it outta there. I tried to look along the edge of the lawn... there. Something dark and tiny, crawling to get away from me. It disappeared in the high, wet grass.

My mind was racing. I don't know how badly the little guy was hurt. Would I have to take it to a wildlife rescuer?

I tracked it into the grass. Just a little ways away from me. Picked it up, cupped it in my palm. It wasn't even struggling. A soaking wet, dark reddish brown something. No, no tail. Not a squirrel then. Less than four inches long. Teeny wet ears glued to its head. I lifted them. Pointy elfin ears. A baby bunny!

I couldn't see any blood. No visible wounds. Tried to warm him a few seconds.

Tears pouring down my face, I reached as far as I could and parted the wet grass. Set him down and pushed up the grass to cover him.

"Find your Mommy sweetheart... find your mommy."

Inside now. Thinking on my decision. If the little guy was in the driveway -- he was -- the da*n cat had him in his mouth. I know cat scratches and bites can be dangerous, even small wounds.

I dunno. I want to have made the best choice... the perfect choice. Still crying. That feline will back. He knows there's a nest.

Quite tame... so you've got a bird pal now?

I like how you put it. Just creative enough to avoid the prudes.

Boss in her own head fits my girl. All Green-Cheeks, from what I read. People with multiple parrots say these guys bully birds twice their size.

the Quaker parrots are completely segregated for the safety of the others they’re really territorial and very delinquent ….still not showing me one iota of love

Sorry to hear it. Parrots (plural) may be key. They have each other and don't have to turn to you as family. You're just the guy who feeds them, cares for them... 😆💜💜

I think you’re right when I say they eat better than me I’m not joking…today they’ve had apple, broccoli, celery, cucumber….sweetened banana chips and a honey bar ….and I obligingly swept out the mess they made yesterday….still not a word of thanks

I turned the suggestions into a Word doc. I've got a new version of Ensure since the old one got discontinued. Abbott labs suggested a replacement. How do you eat an elephant?

Boy though. A nearby pal chopping up apples, broccoli, celery, and cucumber. That'd be nice. 😊 (The faucet needs work too.)

I'm sorry that you are still so upset NBB . It's a natural reaction as you're so caring. I'd be the same. I cried too, when I read your post . Nature can be so cruel. You did your best in the circumstances a d please try not to beat yourself up over it. Easier said than done, I know..

No blood or obvious wounds is a good sign,

That little one may have strayed from the burrow - they do like to explore. Let's hope that mum found him and took him back to safety. I'm sure that they're all safe now - bunnies go quite deep underground and will probably be out of harm's way , where tge cat can't reach them.

Bless you for being such a kind hearted person 🤗🩷

Hi Bunny! Thanks for the comfort. I want to believe he's okay now.

See, I don't think mom had them in a burrow. Wouldn't be the first time. (I'm no expert though.)

He was much too tiny to be exploring. Fit right in my palm with room left.

I am glad you were there to help the poor baby bunny. I would have done the exact same thing. Hopefully the bunny hopped home to the safety of its den.

Nothing_but_books profile image
Nothing_but_books in reply to Stilltrying2

No hopping out of this baby. Much too tiny. He moved by crawling forward.

I'm hoping his mommy found him and took him to safety.

You did good. You made the best choice. Wild animals deserve to be in the wild, so hidding them in the grass was smart. That cat probably won't be back if you chased it off. If you're still worried about the little guys, see if they're still where you left them and try to contact an animal shelter. They are usually very happy to take in the little ones.

Nothing_but_books profile image
Nothing_but_books in reply to cashew78

Basta*d's been back twice. Chased him off again, twice. Cats are nothing if not relentless.

What drives me crazy is why. I deal with raptors hunting without losing it like this. This cat is clearly well-fed and out to play.

You have the kindest, purest heart NBB. ❤️. I too hate to see these creatures suffering. I say a little prayer over every dead animal I see in the road. It breaks my heart when poor innocent animals are hurt or killed. I often want to help and it’s hard to decide when to intervene with wildlife especially. I think you did the right thing!

I agree. I’d feel the same no matter if I did the right thing it does still hurt it’s traumatic even.

Nothing_but_books profile image
Nothing_but_books in reply to Starrlight

It feels that way. Is that silly?

Starrlight profile image
Starrlight in reply to Nothing_but_books

Nope. We are sensitive caring souls. We are strong but our hearts are huge. This would def give me those feelings. Feel what you have to feel.

I would be upset too. Cried reading this. But I think there's a good chance the little bunny will be ok. The thing about cats is when they catch something they play with it for awhile before inflicting harm. Something in their DNA I suppose. So if you got there quickly you are a hero. I would have done the same. This may sound crazy but your story brought back good memories of my Mom. Growing up if our cats were after a bird or a chipmunk she would fly out the back door in her house dress. Broom in hand. She'd swing that broom at the cat until the bird or chipmunk got away. And she was quite a sight.

Nothing_but_books profile image
Nothing_but_books in reply to Mrspjsmom

Oh my goodness your story made me laugh! I can just see her, broom in hand. 🧹🐈

Sorry for the tears -- me too -- but I'm glad for the good memories my story brought back.
