A nurse colleague of mine has been having major anxiety & panic attacks like I am. She was diagnosed today with PTSD, which I believe I may also have. I always thought that affected war, rape, violent crime victims. Now I'm wondering if years of seeing horrible things, but not being the "victim" of them can also cause it. Interested in feedback, especially from PTSD patients. Thanks

PTSD?
PTSD can be caused by a variant of things and not just war. On November 8th, 2018, the town right above me caught fire and the entire town and everything in it burned to the ground. 85 lives were lost. Our electrical company was the cause and unfortunately the fire started early in the morning and the winds were up to 50 miles an hour. The fire was moving a football field a minute. A lot of those who survived have bought or now rent Mobile Homes in the park where I live. They all have PTSD and everytime the wind gets strong, everyone panics and starts packing "to go" bags. So, PTSD can affect anyone for various reasons. I'm praying you both are able to work through what ever fears you are dealing with. Sending hugs.
PTSD is finally being recognized in relation to medical workers and front line workers. It's good to see the dots have been connected here.
Tending to the sick is not an easy job. When you have a challenge within your shift you are still expected to pick yourself up and continue on, without any debriefing.
Now it is being recognized and some hospitals are incorporating debriefing sessions and counseling. I'm sure the need has gone way up since Covid.
I hope you both get the proper trauma therapy. Best of luck to you
It sounds like you have trauma. The "why did I live and others died" is a piece of PTSD. Start therapy. Check out Michelle Rosenthal. God bless.
I got my PTSD from my daughter being abused by her stepfather from age 3 for eight years. She was too scared to tell me until she was 21 and the stepfather is now doing 20 yrs in Strangeways but the trauma my daughter and I had to relive during the court case has given me the condition so it can effect 3rd parties.
Maybe look into Survivors Guilt
PTSD can be caused by anything whether a person witness the incident or incident happens. Like one of my friends had seen his mom being abused by his father in childhood for around 5-6 years. It affected him emotionally and mentally both. He still haunt by the nightmares of his father beating his mom.
Currently he is seeking medical care and keeping himself busy to avoid these things.
