Depression Residential Treatment Centers (USA)

Hi all, I'm brand new here, completely overwhelmed, and hoping you can help me out. I'm trying to find a residential treatment program for my husband who has bipolar 2 and chronic depression and seems to be sinking deeper into a hole the past several months. He was fired from his job in late 2018 and has recently gotten worse in terms of his personal care (bathing, sleeping, eating, etc.) and is essentially playing video games all day.

His CBT therapist of 3 years recently told him that it's time to consider more intensive treatment programs. I've been researching and am having trouble finding places that would be a good fit. Please respond with any recommendations or ideas.

Here's what I'm looking for in a treatment center:

- Residential treatment lasting 4+ weeks (i.e. not short term inpatient)

- DBT therapy offered

- Treatment for depression, bipolar, and dual diagnosis (drug/addiction treatment) - primary focus of the facility should be mental health, NOT drugs/alcohol

- In-network for Cigna or will work with me to get reimbursement for out of network

- Decent accommodations/food

- Ideally in the Northeast but I'm honestly open to anywhere in the US

A bit more background to get ahead of common questions:

- He's not at risk of harming himself or others

- He's been under the care of an excellent CBT therapist and psychiatrist for years

- He's stabilized on several medications for bipolar, depression, and anxiety (lamictal, desvenlafaxine, gabapentin, xanax as needed)

- He is not currently drug dependent but has had issues with this in the past year

- He does not want to "go away for" treatment, but he desperately wants our situation to change

- His psychiatrist has recommended that we consider TMS and/or ECT

I'm at my breaking point here and need him to get treatment for his own well being as well as that of our family.

I would greatly appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks all.

Hello, I have been hospitalized 10 or 11 times now and I have obsessively looked for a place just like you are trying to find for your husband, even if it was out of state I didn't care, but I have yet to find any such place out there. I dream about this perfect place that fits all my needs but I'm not sure that there is one. I've learned that I kind of have to conform to the system and that the system will not conform to me. I know you said that you are not looking for short term inpatient care, but it seems that's kind of where we are at in terms if mental wellness here right now. Which totally doesn't make sense because as many times as I've been hospitalized the longest I've ever stayed was 10 days and if it's suppose to take up to 4 to 8 weeks for a medication to even start helping how the heck do they expect 5 to10 days to be enough, not to mention us go to CBT etc.... The are so overwhelmed with patients that they just try to get you in, and get you out to make room for the next. I have been thinking that it's time for a "tune up" myself, and I'm looking into Centrepoint hospitals. I don't know if they have one in your area or not (I'm in the Midwest) . And it is short term inpatient treatment but that's all I have found that is out there. I sound VERY similar to your husband and I have pretty much all the same needs as it sounds like he does, and I like everything they say when I have looked into Centrepoint. I want a complete overhaul and not to leave until I am on the right track, but I have just been going in to get a tune up about every other year, with very minimal success. I'm not at risk of hurting myself or others either, but you will get that at any place you go. No shoe strings, metal objects all if that.. More times than not they will try to switch up your medications, especially ones like Xanax. It pisses me off and they simply don't listen to you, they always think the doctor knows what's best, when I know what works for me and what doesn't by now. In fact it keeps me from even seeking help sometimes because I am concerned they will screw all my medications up, when me and my doctor have been working hard to get me where I am at. It makes you feel like we have done something wrong, or as if they don't trust us but it is all just protocol and sadly that seems to be where we are at right now in the US. It's been frustrating as hell, but it sounds like he has a wonderful wife who is really trying to find him some help and I know he loves you for it. I don't know what I would do without my mother, and I'm 37 years old. Good luck to you and let us know where he goes.

P.S. I have undergone over 20 ECT treatments as well as Ketamine infusions treatments also. Just PM me if you'd like to know about any of my experiences with any of this, I will try to help if I can.
