I’ve been working as an assistant chef for the past 4 years. I work for a really good chef but the intensity level can be a bit to much for me at times. It has added to my depression and anxiety over the years. We get a break in August so I finally spoke up and asked for a little bit of a change. I’ll still be prepping and cooking a little but I asked to help out on the hospitality front a bit more.
I lack confidence and don’t get much interaction with guests and people at dinner. And I really want to grow and meet people. I don’t enjoy staying pat in jobs. I constantly want to be learning.
I got my wish today starts my first day. I have 2 bosses though and to different hats at times. So it’ll be a bit of a challenge. Now I’ll be interacting with people more. I’m excited and scared at the same time. This is totally out of my comfort zone and my anxiety is pretty high right now. This is what I asked for and hoping this will help me be more talkative with people and build up my confidence as well.
Thanks for allowing me the space to share. I hope you all are having a good day! Sending you all hugs and good thoughts.

That's great Michael that you're putting yourself out there and facing your fears. You should be very proud of yourself! I think this is going to be a positive step for you. Good luck!
Thank you sillysausage appreciate that. It did go very well! I smiled more today then I have in a long time. Smiling hasn’t been one of my strong suits in the last 20 years. I hope you are doing well!
I'm thrilled you are taking this big step forward! Just remember that people WANT to engage with you! This type of job is great because the social interaction is brief - so you don't have to think of a lot of stuff to say which reduces your anxiety. Onward and upward! Good karma coming your way!
This is so exciting. I’m really happy for you. My son is a chef. He used to do both too until he bought the restaurant. Now he can stay hidden all he wants.
Thank you for the reply and kind words. I couldn’t imagine owning my own restaurant but I certainly can imagine wanting to be hidden though. I’m happiest just prepping the food!! And now a little more smiling and helping people. Just the social interaction is new for me. But it is what I wanted.
I remember when I made the decision to “put myself out there,”and learn how to interact with the public. One of the scariest, best things I’ve ever done. I’m 70 now and very grateful for all the jobs I’ve had and all the people I’ve met. Good job. Lynne
Congratulations both in getting the new opportunity but also for having the desire to continually learn and grow. How awesome! Yes change can be challenging. Stay prayed up. Ask God for his loving grace, guidance and success each day. When things feel overwhelming, remind yourself of God’s promises; Jeremiah 29:11, Isaiah 40:31, James 5:1. These are a few of my favorites. All the best in your new job.
