Recently, I listened to a sermon that I think really highlights the importance of listening to people who are undergoing a difficult time. The first step should not be to offer advice, to reassure, or to take action to give someone "what they need." Instead, it should be to listen to their pain, recognize its uniqueness, and then maybe ask if there is anything you can do to help. Otherwise, you may unintentionally convey that you know more about the person's pain than they do. This is so important, and it is still something I am working on, but it's a good point for all of us to remember, I think.
