I'M NEW HERE

Right now I'm still a college student, about to graduate. I worry about my degree, my job and my life, all these things drive me crazy. Like people around you just push and push, and the other day my dad called, he talked and talked but I don't wanna say anything, in that specific moment, I can feel my heart beating quickly and I can't even breath. The anxiety is becoming out of control I think, the mental health thing to them is more like a joke. Why is it so hard?

Welcome!! Unfortunately mental health is not something society is taking seriously yet. Yes, there are talks and discussions and maybe even remedies to help but its still this hush hush thing no one wants to see or admit. I’m sorry you’re going through this.

Thanks, Emily. I'm trying to keep positive by ocopying myself, it does help to alleviate the anxiety. Hope you all well.

My family as well didn’t really take me seriously when I told them I was having trouble with my mental health. It unfortunately took a few years for them to finally get it. I hope that doesn’t happen to you.

I'm sorry it took so long for them to get in, but better late than never, right? Honestly, lots of things in my life trigger the anxiety, I have to figure it out myself. It's always been nice for you to share and to talk, thank you.

why do you worry? i.e. what grandiose event will happen if you fail any of the things you listed?

As Schwarzenegger said - if you fear failure, you will never get anything done. And people perform best without plan B.

So deliberately putting one in a position which you think is anxiety inducing, actually makes people into better human beings, and failing makes them learn and become better.

..

You fear success, fear going out of your comfort zone, that's what you fear, mate.

Thanks for your advice, very reasonable. Well, I do know what I have to do, but under the anxiety, I can't control my body and my mind. Doesn't make any sense, right? But it is true.

Hi I heard this advice on here. If you live in the past you live with regret. If you live in the future you live with anxiety. But if you live in the present you live with balance. Don't be so anxious about your future that you forget how to enjoy the present.

I am old and have learnt that the future usually takes care of itself and all the worry in the world won't change it. Concentrate on enjoying yourself in the present and take life day by day. Every time you start to worry about the future stop yourself short and ground yourself by noticing whether the sun is shining. Look at things around you and notice the colours, touch things and think about the texture etc.

There is a discipline called Mindfulness which teaches you that so why not have a look online. It may be able to help you. x

Thank you so much. I just read a poem of Charles Bukowski, there is a line which might be related to Mindfulness: I found moments of peace in cheap rooms just staring at the knobs of some dresser or listening to the rain in the dark. I'll look into this discipline later.

You are welcome. Please don't get to my age and realise you spent too much of your youth worrying instead of enjoying the day. x

I will bear that in mind and it's never too late to enjoy your life, so good luck to both of us.

Oh I have some enjoyment now but regret losing so much of my youth to depression and anxiety. x

Well, now you're helping others(like me) with all those things you've been through, in this way I think you should be proud of yourself.

If you are having panic attacks, CBT therapy can be helpful. Good luck!

Life can be hard because you don't know what to expect next. After you complete one goal, you have to work towards another one. The fact that you are getting a college degree is a great success. This information can help you bit.ly/take_steps in the right direction.
