Gas and belching

I reacted badly to Lexapro after one dose. Doc says I’ll have to wait it out.

I will not be taking this one again. How did any of you deal with the gas belching nausea and bloating. For me It’s the worst part of because it makes me more anxious

Spinner that fact is I never experienced those symptoms. Your doctor is right

in that one dose shouldn't determine if that is the right medication for you.

He your doctor planning to try another med?

Gillyflower18 profile image
Gillyflower18 in reply toAgora1

Doc actually said don’t take anymore. Let it clear from my system. Maybe another med down the road but not now. It’s been awful.

I'm sorry that happened to you. That's why I never like to ask what works

and what doesn't. We all are so different in how our body accepts or rejects

a medication. Give yourself a chance for the med to work itself out which shouldn't

be long with just the one dose. Good Luck with the next choice. :)

They said a week possibly longer

Sounds like a plan :) Hang in there.

I don’t feel to good today and may sound not really credible but: I really really believe in medications. It’s really important to find best mix and right doses. It’s important to take the med at the same hour and check the prescription if it’s on empty stomach or with food. I believe that everything that happens to us is just chemical imbalances that can be solved. It takes time but I have my hope in it. Give it chance and be strong

Orangeblossom, you are so absolutely correct in that it's not only about the right med and dose but it's also about how you take it and when.

I was started on Lexapro in the hospital and the nurses always gave it to me with

food at lunchtime. I kept that schedule and it seems to work for me. Another thing

is I never take over the counter meds w/o checking with the pharmacist to see if it

might interact. You're right in that there is more to it then just popping a pill.

I'm sorry this isn't a good day for you. Wishing you a better tomorrow. :) xx

Exactly! Food and other pills may interact. Also - some of pills should energize us so taking them later than 8am May cause sleep problems! It’s super important to watch yourself when you start. The medicine needs time to also settle down.

You see, I’m taking Prozac for a month now. I went through horrible heartburn. It’s gone! I don’t really feel the medicine uplifting my mood but it gives me really really vivid dreams. I know that I react to it. And I plan on giving it chance to settle down. And after taking SSRIs in really high dosage now I plan to start low and watch, instead of just “assume” it has no influence on me.

the chewable or gel form gax X (also in generic at the high dose), and OTC med liquid anti nausea med or by rx and otc meds for acid reflux or contact a GI specialist MD for the prescription meds. Perhaps by now your symptoms may have sibsided. I hope so.

Sorry you've been suffering.

Subsided a little due to farting 🤣🤣🤣 and belching. Not glamourous but it helps. I was afraid of gas x because some people say it makes gas from meds worse. I’m drinking a little peppermint tea.

I started lexapro in October, and the first two weeks were extra hard on my tummy. I had upset stomach and loose bowels. My salivary glands went through a fluctuation between being cotton mouth or excess saliva. So, I stocked up on pepto, drank lots of water, and increased sodium in take just a tad to help with the excess saliva. By week three, these side effects had slowed down, and by week four, I was back to normal. And, feeling back to myself with regard to my anxiety.

I’m not sure how you feel about waiting it out. I did, and it was totally worth it. But, listen to what your doctor tells you. Hope you feel better.

I have tried every single anti depressant and I feel no different. Nothing works. I stopped taking Xanax over the summer and my anxiety is worse than ever. My psychiatrist has tried several different meds for anxiety and insomnia and nothing works. I am learning coping skills but without the support and encouragement of my family these skills are very challenging. Plus there are just those times when there needs to be a “quick fix” for lack of a better word. I get so pissed when people assume that I’m addicted and I need to take these meds every day. I’m not asking for a 30 day supply—maybe 15? It helped with the really bad days. Does anyone know of any anti depressants that actually help them get out of bed and get them going?

My daughter is taking it now but she is tapering. She takes it before she goes to bed because it makes her sleepy. She started with 5ml and slowly went up to 20ml so the side effects would affect less. She’s tapering down to 10ml and she’ll completely end it in a few months.

Hang in there, and remember, YOU are the one who decides what gets put in your body. Ask for one of the "older", but proven antidepressants.... Prozac worked for me 25 yrs ago. I didn't want something new, I wanted something that I knew worked for me. I ask to be put back on it 2mis ago and I am doing OK! Ask the doctor, (do some research on your own) you shouldn't have to "wait out" anything that makes you feel like "caca" (know what I mean?) If you doctor declines to change your meds, you have every right under The Patient Bill of Rights, to call your primary doctor or health insurance plan and request a different doctor.

Be pro-active in your health care. Get a new Doc, when you see your new doctor, for the first time, tell him/her what went on with your medication, it didn't feel right to you to. "Wait it out" just explain you want to be a part of making decisions regarding my health care. There are a lot of physicians who get kickbacks from "Big pharmacy companies" for prescribing their drugs.

Most physicians enjoy a patient who wants to be involved. Take a trusted friend or family member with you to your first appt. Let your friend know ahead if the doctor starts to question you about your problems, you may ask you friend to wait in the outer office until your appointment is over.

Good luck my friend! Mistykitten

I think what Spinner means when they say they have been told to wait it out is that they have to wait for the drug to leave their system before trying anything else, which sounds fair to me. There is nothing their doctor can do to make it leave the body any quicker.

You are correct. He just wants to get it completely cleared to start fresh.

in reply toGillyflower18

I hope you have more success with the next drug. Unfortunately it sometimes takes a bit of trial and error to find the right one. Hope you feel better soon too 💜

As Agora said, antidepressants affect everyone differently. I've been on Lexapro for almost 5 years now. The first couple of weeks were tough because I hate taking medication, especially something new that I've never had before. My psychiatrist listened to my concerns and worries and when I had the nausea and diarrhea side effects, she wrote me a prescription for a prescription strength antidiarrheal medication and for Phenergan, a nausea/anti-vomiting medication. She also wrote a script for a short acting anxiety med (Xanax).

If you can make it through the first week or 2, the side effects do go away. If you choose to keep trying, my advice would be to take it with at least a small meal and later in the evening towards bedtime.

I hope you find something that works for you.

Thank you so much. The Zantac really helped my knotted up stomach. It was very bad this morning along with more diarrhea it had me in tears again due to the stress. Will continue to drink water as er doc said it helps flush Lexapro out of the system. Seeing my doc today. Hopefully he will give me something for the anxiety so I can make it till my appt with the psychiatrist next Tuesday. Everyone is so uptight about giving benzodiazepines. I don’t abuse them and they really help. Hopefully my psychiatrist will be better able to manage the meds.
