Does Sad or Deep Music?

Just a question I'm curious to ask, does listening to music that might be considered to most as sad-deep-or depressing help or make your mood worse...I've been told my music choice is probably making things worse, but I do find comfort in listening to it, example (Lana del ray)...I'm usally drawn to music that's real and makes you feel but I've Never given much thought to the fact that it could make my moods worse...to me it is almost like the feeling your not alone in that depressed way of thinking...

It probably depends on the person. All of my favorite movies, books, and music are generally considered "sad, slow, depressing" by others, but I think there's art in a slow story build-up, and in showing true emotions. Maybe feeling emotions in movies or music helps validate my feelings?

I agree emotions in movies or music helps validate many people's feelings...I personally don't feel worse but somewhat better when I listen to music that I relate and feel

It depends on my day. My battle cry song for my anxiety/depression is Mercy by Shawn Mendes. I do like up beat music though when I'm down. I wish you all the best. Love, peace, light, joy & hugs!!!

Sometimes for me sad music helps to release some emotions and pent up anxiety then leaves space to get some uplifting tunes on and find some joy again🎶🎧🎵✌🏼🌞🎸p.s.love Lana del Ray too

I think it's your choice! I use to listen to sad music ,when I needed to let out a cry of hurt ! I stayed away from love songs at the time I was feeling down . I couldn't watch love movies,or anything where I wanted to be in my love relationship! Took time , I now like up beat music ,so I could move n put my dance on Also to do my work outs ! A 1 n a 2 n a 3 ~~

I agree with everybody else and I also love sad songs and documentaries and movies for their “realness”, it feels comforting. I love Lana too. Bat For Lashes is also SO great. Her song “Laura” is that kind of brilliant, soaring melancholy that is so gorgeous it ties you up in knots. Love her songs “Marilyn” and “What’s a girl to do” also. And I’m so intrigued by “Kidding”, the new series on Showtime. Just watched the promo on YouTube. It’s in the vein of this existential loveliness. See nothing wrong with finding beauty in painful things, that’s our job as humans, that’s where art is born. Thanks for your post.

Thanks for the suggestion, definitely check her out...

I find listening to music reminds me of some happy event that happened while the song was playing. Even sad songs. I shared a room with my brother. He played guitar so I was exposed to a wide variety of music. So many songs bring back beautiful memories to me.

Real depressing music like Neilson's "without you" can make me depressed. I also hate bitter love song music like "jar of hearts" so I tend to avoid those types of music x

Firstly, Lana del Ray is a Queen 😍

Secondly, I'm the same way. I prefer to listen to darker/sadder music I can relate to rather than upbeat cheery music which makes me dwell on the fact that I'm NOT happy.. and then it makes me even sadder than I was to begin with. Maybe it makes it worse and we shouldn't be listening to sad/deep music, but personally I prefer it..

I honestly believe that sad music does make conditions worse. I use to play the guitar but put an end to it because the music that I play and enjoy is pretty much depressing. Even though happier music doesnt really appeal to me it does make me FEEL better. IDK If you listen to motzarts violin concertos the violin trills are uplifting and have a playful sound. I would rather be decisive then on the fence on this so I would firmly stand by my view from experience. I hope that helps

Hi Hudgins150, I personally prefer the more motivational songs that bring up my spirit and drive. My 2 favorites are "The Fight Song" by Rachel Platton as well as her song,

"Stand by You". They give me just what I need to get past the fear and no I am never alone. Make it great day :)
