Hi there, so I don’t really know how to start these since I’m new, but here goes nothing.
My parents and doctor want me to join the debate team in the Spring because they say it will be, “good for me.” They say that it will help with my social anxiety and my fear of public speaking. My family looked further into it and they found out you can watch the debate team, well debate, and that they are super open and friendly to those that would like to watch.
I love debates, however, I’m scared to join it, because it’s hard for me to talk to new people. I joined the book club this year and introducing myself to them was hard enough.
So, should I give the debate team a try?

Maybe you could attend some debates and see how you feel about them? You could gauge the camaraderie and "vibe" of the team. I know lots of brave souls who have used public speaking as a tool to manage/ moderate their social anxiety, and this sounds like it may be a supportive group in which to do just that. You would learn communication skills that will translate into other settings, and might make your social interactions less intimidating. Also, they won't be "new" people for long!
I say, give it a try! You don't have to do it forever, and you might end up loving it!
Don't forget to give yourself points for even considering this activity, and extra points if you try it. Good luck and keep us posted!
Glad to hear it. My friends who were on debate teams are no slouches, conversationally, and this sounds like a pleasant group of folks. Let us know how you like it!
