Is Knee replacement advised for someone on Lupron with multiple distant Mets? I asked my MO and I heard him say no but my wife heard it would be okay. Has anyone had knee replacement?
I had to stop walking on treadmill because of knee pain, my primary care doctor took xrays and said my knees have little padding between, he also mentioned arthritis; I believe it is from taxotere and lupron and the weight I have gained. The primary care doc gave me a steroid shots in both knees but I had little help from it. Now he wants to shoot something else in my knees. But I may see orthopedic surgeon instead.
Problems with the knee requiring knee replacement are usually caused by osteoarthritis a degenerative process of the joints. This process is accelerated by castration and antiandrogens. The problem to me is that knee replacement is a major surgery requiring a painful and long (several months) recuperation period. You have to consider if you want to go into this process having to fight your cancer at the same time.
Knee replacement pain lasted all of two weeks. However the constant bone to bone pain, even while laying down and sitting, was immediate and gone forever.
Tough situation. But I would definitely look into the shots into the knees. The docs are probably talking hyaluronic acid. It helps some and the downside is minor. Good luck.
After five injections, the only fix was a total knee replacement. Well worth it as the constant pain was gone. It’s been almost ten years since and I am still pain free.
My husband is scheduled for knee replacement in Jan or Feb. MO says nothing in his current treatment prevents the surgery. He is on Xtiva and Lupron. Xtiva is kicking his butt big time and making the knee even more painful. He had minimal side effects for 3 1/2 years on Zytiga..but it eventually stopped working (psa back up to 11.2) so started Xtiva. Everything in life of dealing with PCA is a choice. The cortisone shots used to do the trick but last one totally ineffective and knee much worse on Xtiva. Surgery, although no piece of cake, will help alleviate the major knee pain. We had to come home early from vacation knee was so bad...unable to do any of the things planned for the trip...made the final decision at that time to go for surgery. Unfortunately, surgery cannot be scheduled for 4 months after receiving a cortisone shot so keep that in mind, thus the Jan or Feb scheduling date. Dealing with the side effects of Xtiva is bad enough... surgery will at least give him some relief for the knee. I guess your decision depends on your pain level.
I had a total knee replacement in 2008 while on Lupron and four years after a six month chemotherapy trial . My Sports Medicine Orthopedist coordinated with my Cardiologist and Medical Oncologist. All three were in different practiced in three different groups spread across the Houston metropolitan area. I had zero problems ........ I will note that the hospital staff Medical Oncologist was sent in because my white blood count was out of whack..... my question to him was, “After chemo, isn’t one’s immune system compromised and the white blood cell count is expected to be off?” He replied yes and asked when I had chemo. I told him and mentioned the first infusion drug and he replied that it would never work. They next day I gave him a paper from my MO and his reply was this is interesting and went off to read....
Two months later my guy said something like so the hospital MO called me. “And?” .... “We had a nice discussion.” ........
Anyway, I haven’t looked back since my knee replacement. So glad that I did it. Good luck.
