knee replacement

i was just diagnosed stage 4 psa 250 psma scan detected mets 2lymph in pelvis 1lymph suspicious in back Waiting on a prostate biopsy.

I am in need of a knee replacement and wrote it off when I was diagnosed. But today I saw Todd1963 refer to having a knee replacement while undergoing therapy. Todd or anyone else have any advice?

Since my diagnosis, I have had both knees and hips replaced. I’m trying to become the next bionic man😉. There should be no issues with the surgery as long as you are not on chemotherapy. Chemo weakens the immune system and the risk of infection is much greater. Of course, check with your doctors first.

I am 74 with osteoarthritis in left knee & right knee not far behind. I was told it can take over 6 months to recover from the operation & apart from the cost I wondered do I need to go through all that at my age.

Just my own thoughts & hope not to discourage anyone.

Hi, I'm having a knee replacement operation in September. I spoke with the oncologist and asked if I needed to stop any medication, he said no everything can remain the same.

If I was you, I would seriously consider the opportunity of a better quality of life after the op. If its as painful as mine, the thought of carrying on like that any longer than I have too, just isn't worth it.

Hello PJ, I just had what they call a partial knee replacement surgery (you can look it up-only did one side) on 22 May 2023, almost 4 weeks ago. I had injured my knee years ago (18) and had a minor surgery back then. I was going to get it fixed in 2020 but with the pandemic I did not. I was dx with advanced prostate cancer in Feb 2021 w/ extensive bone mets.. I was afraid that I would never be able to do anything about my knee. last year my PSA, went to undetectable and my RO and MO said now would be a good time to get it looked at. I am going through PT now. I have had chemo earlier in my journey, and now I am on Lupron, Xtandi, Xgeva etc. I do not think it has been any harder because of all my therapy's for cancer. My MO suggested that I stop taking Xtandi for 2 weeks after the surgery, so I would not be as fatigued and help to rebound. I went to half dosage for 1 week and back on the full dosage. At this point it is going as expected. PT told me yesterday that they think I am ahead of schedule in my therapy. For the most part, Thru this I am also able to work on my muscle tone in my legs at the same time as getting my knee back up and going. (I would do it again.) This has been my experience.

I had a lot of pain in my knee when I walked on it before surgery.

I have recently had lumbar fusion. I was told that radiation could effect healing.

had hip replaced august 22 while on bucalutemide. No problems at all And elimination of the pain was incredible boon. Am now almost a year out. All adls conpleted independently now. Knee recovery is longer my friends tell me.

I was DX 11 years ago and had my knee replaced 6 years ago. My MO saw no reason for me to not have the surgery.

My wife Robin has had 3 knee replacements (a partial that did not help, a total revision and a total on the other knee). Do the rehab, it’s not easy. We have friends that didn’t that never fully recovered. Take the pain meds as described. You do not help yourself by being under medicated especially on PT days. Yes, it takes 6 months to start to feel right, but a full year before you will know if your surgery was successful.

I had a total knee replacement 3 months ago. My MO had no concerns, and I've had no trouble. Lupron and Abiriterone +Prednisone for one year.

If you need a knee or hip replacement and you live in the New York City or Long Island area or Westchester area I would recommend Dr. Friedrich Boettner of the Hospital for Special Surgery (a/k/a HSS). I do not get paid for this.....and he is not a relative.
