If you are in the UK we have very having a little heat wave. How is everyone keeping up with their walks?

Been getting slathered up and getting out there. Made a mistake last week, out all day with my Dad In Yorkshire and I didnt take my suncream so got a little red, lesson learned. My preference is a sports sun cream as it lets your skin breathe and I just find it more comfortable.
You know I was just going to ask what people think to 'sports' sunscreen, given that it costs more.
I used it for my HM in 2016 and since then I haven’t used anything else. It only seems to come in factor 30 or 50 but basically it allows you to sweat without hindrance and therefore that allows your skin to still breathe, all while still keeping you covered. I don’t think I would go back now. I also find you don’t feel sticky afterwards.
I think it can be easy to underestimate if you have some breeze or you're near water. I've thrown out six or seven lots at long last, most of which (possibly all of which) we brought with us when we moved and we've been here nearly nine years...
My son did a monster walk last week... I think it was pretty much marathon distance (certainly 50,000 steps in a day), to Sheffield over the moors. Not an organised event, he just fancied it and did it by myself. He did put on sunscreen, wore a hat, took water, but he forgot his legs and the backs burned.
Ouch - that's painful!
Hi Rfc! Not done much walking this week I'm afraid. I've had the devil of a time with my spine since February (as you know), when the dr advised me (strongly!) to move to a home without stairs. Well, it all came to a head last week when I was offered a bungalow - and I got the keys on Friday. Just waiting for the carpets to go in and I'll be moving again - so it's packing for me for at least 10 days!
Woohoo, virtual house warming party 😀🥂🥂🥂. Moving is stressful and it is hard work but I hope once you are settled it becomes a wonderful home for you. Rfc x.
Thanks Rfc - it's going to be wonderful! Thank goodness I've got some confidence with walking up hills now, cos this village has no flat streets!?!
That's excellent news that you're moving into a bungalow. We have stairs too, and I'd love to move somewhere without them.
Hi runswithdogs - I must say, the thought of having no stairs (now it's actually sunk in!) is becoming more and more attractive. It's all happening so fast that I'm running round like a headless chicken! But I'm off to look after my grandchildren today, until Monday, which means that I'm going to have a rest from sorting out and packing! xx
I'm back from the Lake District, my all time favourite place and I can't get enough of it and so wish I lived there, and did plenty of walking. I did Striding and Swirrell Edges, up Striding and down Swirrell and although I found it hard in the heat I didn't suffer afterwards as I had sun cream on and wore a hat. I walked up Skiddaw and back down Carleside and also did Catbells on our last day up there and did both on my own, absolutely loved it.
Off on my bike this afternoon as I have a dental appointment so that will be in total around 12 miles, can't wait.
Wow sounds great. The Lake District is one place I have always wanted to walk. Hope the dentist went ok.
The Lake District is one if the mist beautiful places and I say to anyone that hasn't been to go, it's amazing😁. Dentist was all good thanks.
Sounds like you found a little bit of heaven crazyfitness!
It was heaven, I absolutely love the place even if it's raining there.😀
One tip for the heat is instead of water to take a little dilute sports drink, or make your own using the WHO's oral rehydration therapy recipe you can find online (it's just salt, sugar and water). I usually implement this for myself when temperatures climb, and am now going to force my chums to consume it as well. After our last walk in the mountains, one of my friends started suffering with heat exhaustion in the evening and had to go to the hospital for an IV. I've seen it happen at work in the field as well. Sometimes water just doesn't cut it, and it's a cheap fix to make sure you're feeling good.
Also, lightweight long sleeves and pants can be much cooler than shorts and a t-shirt. Keeping the sun off your skin and wearing a hat with a brim is key.
Happy walking folks.
Excellent advice, thank you.
Here in the US of A , we've just had a BIG heat wave -- 5 days 90+ °F heat index 100+! I stayed in my apartment 4 days; finally, on Thursday it was cool enough for me to drive to the senior center to swim laps 30 minutes.
Breathing shallow and exhausted. Keeping up with drinks and cycling instead if walking, which I recommend as slightly cooler. I went to Bristol with my daughter and got a fan that doesn't need batteries, a wind up hand fan. It is really good for cooling down the face.
