I would have loved to join the Christmas challenge but I am taking a late holiday in November with family and I am not sure the family will be serving up calorie controlled fare

Many of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Eating All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:

Hi S11m

Not sure at this early stage if I could do without food for a whole day voluntarily (lol) but the low carb high fat I could manage. I will certainly explore that as I think I am already eating that way ...just need to watch my portions

There's no need to aim for that. It may well come in time as you adjust your diet but it may not. I think that getting a real sense of hunger and fullness is the key, then you won't need to watch portions, it will come naturally, as will the pacing of your meals.

This will help with working on your low carb diet dietdoctor.com/low-carb and do consider joining the Daily Diary. There are several low carbers there and you can compare menus :)
