Hello there. I've been having a high heart rate lately so my doctor reccommended some blood tests. I was surprised to be told by the receptionist at my docrors today that my glucose level is high and 'borderline'. This has given me quite the shock and I'm desperate to know if I turn to good nutrition now is there any chance of avoiding diabetes? My doctor will be ringing me tomorrow to discuss it. I have also just been put on beta blockers and prozac so all in all not a great week for me.....any reassuring thoughts would be very greatfully recieved, thank you <3

I found out today my glucose levels are 'borderline'. Is there any hope of me not getting full blown diabetes? :(

This is an amazing forum to be part of. Many of people on here have different areas of concern but we are all trying to get to, or maintain, our desired weight. As you get to know us, and share experiences with us, you will find what a super supportive bunch we are, and that we don't pass judgements.
Here are a few suggestions about how to get the most out of the forum.
The first place to look is at the Pinned Posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.
Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news; and you will have important news to share with us.
Have a look at the NHS 12-week plan; many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This can be a major turning point, realising you can eat anything as long as the calories are accounted for and are within your personal limit.
Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate; that happens to me quite regularly!
The forum also has group weigh-ins every day, just choose which day you wish to weigh, join the post for that day and weigh in once per week. The Daily Diary is a very useful thread where we post our planned menu for the day, including calories if you count them, any exercise you have planned and any tips that you can share. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page.
If you just want to chat, to say hello, or share any news or struggles then look out for the What's Happening Today thread. There are many other challenges to get involved with, just choose to do what you are comfortable with and feel free to join as many, or as few as you wish.
The grey box next to people's names are achievement badges, and as a new member of the community you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, you need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration, and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here regularly.
If you are using the new HU App on your mobile phone (helpful for when you are out and about), many of features mentioned are not available; use the full website version to maximise your experience.
If you have any questions please just ask. The more you join in and connect with people the more you get out of the forum.
I wish you well as you get started with a new lifestyle.

Hello Daggerblaze
Don't panic. I was told on 29 June I was pre diabetic and was shocked to find out how much I weighed . I could not remember the last time I had stood on the scales .
My GP made an appointment for me to see the diabetic nurse who said only one piece of fruit a day no bread only 1 new potato, no pasta, no sugar go away and lose weight and exercise more. My reading was in the mid range of pre diabetic. I have had medication for high blood pressure for years and was on 4 different tablets I had no real idea of how to lose weight and had never counted caloriez
I researched on line and read about the implications of being pre diabetic and came across a marvellous book by Dr MicHael Moseley medical journalist who had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes He looked into all the research and wrote the 8 week blood sugar diet, Prof Thomas of Newcastle University had clinical trials and it was found that the majority of people who did this diet for 8 weeks could reverse the situation and return their blood sugar levels to normal
I followed this diet eating 800 cals only a day, no Sugar or sugar substitutes and only low G I carbs and increased my activity level. I now walk a min of 10000 steps a day as well as swimming 30 mins and doing the 10 mins HIT on an exercise bike . I bought a fit bit charge 2 to to help with monitoring heart rate step Count and calories intake
I was delighted when last SAturday I had a blood test and found my blood sugar level Returned to well within normal range. I have lost 11 kg and I have now stopped one of the blood pressure tabs as my blood pressure fell significantly with the weight loss
I don't know how old you are but I suspect you are much younger than me. I am 70 so if I can do it you can.
There is a very good calorie counter recipe book to compliment the diet book and the diet book also has recipes. Both are quite reasonably priced on Amazon
I have been very determined and not snacked AprT from The occAsionL snack of a few almonds or walnuts as recommended. The book explains why you have become insulin resistant and the science behind the diet. I have not felt hungry despite the low calorie intake because you eat foods which keep your blood sugar level. The food is Mediterranean style and very tasty but you are advised not to snack between meals to give your organs time to recover. The visceral fat around your organs, Internal Fat, is what you need to lose
So in short I highly recommend you give it go because the 8 weeks soon passes And you will be much much healthier
Best wishes
As others have quite rightly said, type 2 diabetes is reversible if detected and acted on. The earlier the better. You have the opportunity to do exactly that. I too was diagnosed with prediabetes, I was very very close to being diabetic, but just outside. I have changed my diet, lost weight and exercise more. I am due another blood test shortly so fingers crossed. Good luck with it. You can do it. James
I need to lose 2 stone and am 65. I too bought the Michael Moseley book and it is really good. Interesting to read as well as loads of helpful and easy to follow ways of eating (rather than dieting), and good recipes too which can also be adapted into lots of other meals. I would highly recommend it. 800 calories doesn't sound very much, but when a day of meals is planned, it is fine and filling, and you do get used to it. Good luck with it all.
thank you! ^_^
