A week ago today I saw a dietitian who advised me not to restrict the foods high in purines so much. I went ahead and made myself healthy salads and meals and whereas for the past year I have totally avoided SPINACH/LENTILS/BROAD BEANS they have been welcomed back onto my reduced sized plate.
After a whole year of being free of gout I have had another attack today in my left foot.
I restricted my diet on Sunday to 500 calories as was advised and today has been my 2nd low calorie day.
I’ve been swimming more and attending aqua classes so have been moderately active but this gout is immobilising.
Any suggestions anyone? I’ll contact my doctor in the morning.

While you're under medical care for specific conditions, it wouldn't be appropriate for me to advise about this. In your position, I would want my GP and dietitian to be communicating with each other to avoid contradictory advice.
Apart from the 500 calorie days, how much are you eating on the other days? Have you checked the NHS BMI calculator for your advised calorie range, so you can discuss that with your health professionals? Here it is nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-we...
I have had one episode of gout several years ago - fortunately just one - so I have at least a small idea of what you're dealing with, and hope you can get the best possible management for your condition, while also making progress with weight loss
I went on a 4.5hr session on a DERIK course (Diabetes Education Revision In Kent) as I have recently been told I have Type 2. I’m very keen to put it into remission through dieting and losing weight healthily
My dad really struggles with it for years and it always gets triggered when he eats any type of red meat, cold cuts and tomatoes. The problem for him was never volume but instead what he ate. Other foods she was instructed to keep away from (other then the ones I mentioned) are seafood, anchovies and sardines, any type of offal, sodas, alcohol and industrialised products like ketchup, juices, chocolate, fast food, jared sauces, ham, hot dogs, etc. Hope this helps but I am sure your dietitian will be able to guide you better.
Yes the foods that you listed are on the high purine list. It’s great that your dad is aware of his triggers. Does he take any medication for it do you know? or does he prevent flare-ups by watching his diet?
Hi, I've recently developed gout in my right hand and it's a pig of a condition. I've increased my water intake to help and have succumbed to the Allopurinol to make it bearable. All this after a considerable weight loss, bah humbug
Hi ScouseTaffy my uric acid blood test last showed over 500 and I think the norm is around 240. Do you know the level yours was when you were started on Allopurinol?
I’m frustrated as it prevents me from being as active as I’d like. Are you having to watch your diet due to gout? Finally do you know what triggers yours?
I often have gout like symptoms which move from one foot to the other, my GP and various podiatrists to whom I was referred have all ruled out gout and all the other usual suspects for foot pain which is comforting but also frustrating. There do not appear to be any dietary triggers, my uric acid levels are normal and the only consensus seems to be that if they didn't have so much weight to carry my feet would not complain so much. The elephant in the room being both literal and metaphorical you see. Hence my commitment to lose a minimum of 10kg. I reckon if I put that effort in and I am still having difficulty I can legitamately ask for more tests. All my other health indicators are fine. So, I empathise with your frustration and hope you can find you own personal solution to the problems you have ...
Thank you for your good wishes. All the best with your weight loss. I am learning more and more about fasting days and how good they are for the body. I chose Sunday’s and Wednesdays to restrict mine and am seeing impressive results so far. I am reaching out for support as I’ve found in the past that I lose interest and slip back and pile on the weight. Keeping a positive mind is my friend.
I'm due for blood test tomorrow. I tried without the Allopurinol but couldn't cope. I'm on tramadol and and still was in agony, I use crutches and couldnt hold them with my right hand. I've got 2 fingers involved plus I have osteoarthritis in wrist and end finger joints. In the end I said, GIVE ME DRUGS!
Since I've been losing weight I've had all sorts wrong with me, I'm still waiting for the benefits of weightloss to kick in lol
I dont eat the purines foods except maybe chocolate 😣
It’s miserable to be in pain and I feel for you ScouseTaffy. I’ve just been to my chemist to collect some Narproxin but have to say it did improve last night when I rubbed Ibuprofen gel into the joint. By hook or by crook I will get to my aqua class tonight! Pain seems to disappear in the water as the water supports the weight. I will be driving there though not walking. All the very best to you in controlling your pain.
I was a swimmer until I developed cellulitis in 2008. Swam 6 times a week. Developed lymphodema, gained massive weight and repeat infections so swim no more. I'm thinking of changing my middle name to Lucky
I go out to eat with a friend who told me he has gout he explained that he has too much uric acid in his urine may be in blood I was not too sure but his calves and knees were painful
now when he enjoys a glass of wine I make sure he drinks a glass of water too
he still gets attacks being a man not going to a doctor and self medicates
