Hello joining this group as I need help to lose around 6 stone! Can't believe at the moment that I will be able to reach that target, but a couple of stone is achievable. Being so over weight is affecting my health, particularly my joints, I have very painfully arthritis in my hip and knees, so I'm bit stuck on the exercise front. Feels like I have a mountain to climb 😯

Hi CherylDee and welcome.

Congratulations on coming here and posting. That was the big step and the rest of your journey you can break down into little steps. Most of us here set mini goals, such as getting to the first 7lbs or 5kgs or some other visually achievable goal. So no mountains here, just a series of mole hills :)

Sorry to hear about the arthritis but as you say, losing some weight can only be a good thing.

An administrator will reply to your post, explaining how to get the best from this forum.

Wishing you luck!

Hi CherylDee, I have exactly the same problems with knees and hips and I also have the same amount of weight to lose but I have found that using a mini stationary bike 10min at a time works or me and been doing for 2 weeks and have managed to lose 7lb. I would also like to welcome you HU......

Hi and welcome. 6 stone is a lot of weight, but it didn't come on all in one go and it will not disappear in a flash either. I agree with Tiggerr that you should set mini goals and celebrate your successes along the way (non food celebrations 🎉 of course).

I have no experience with arthritis and exercise but people say swimming is gentle. I hope you find something that works for you.

Hi and welcome,

Breaking it down into small achievable sections is working for me, I too had 6 stone to lose, (1.5 stone lost so far) and yes my knees constantly ached, but the support, help and encouragement from this forum is second to none, I've tried loads of fad diets, yo-yo dieter for years, but not this time.

I found swimming helps as it's taken the weight from my knees, small changes to your diet are more achievable than all out changes (sugar swaps) more fruit and veg, get rid of the junk so it's not easily accessible.

It's not a mountain it's lots of little ant hills and you can destroy each and every one of them 💪 good luck

Hi and welcome 😊

I have 10 stone to lose as part of my regime to avoid cancer reoccurrence. Following chemotherapy last year I was left with osteoarthritis in hips and knees and walking is painful after only a short distance.

I turned to swimming which I now do 3-4 times a week. It's non-weight bearing so is easy on the joints (avoid breaststroke leg if knees are affected, i do breaststroke arms but crawl leg)

I started on 20 lengths and now to 40+ lengths each time increasing it 2 lengths every fortnight. I am so much fitter! I breathe easier and I am toning up well in arms and legs.

Couple with a good diet with small realistic short term goals and you'll get there!!

Keep us posted and good luck

Hello CherylDee and welcome to the weight loss forum ☺

The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you ☺ (Please note if you are using the new HU App these facilities aren't available yet so you may prefer to use the full website version)

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news ☺

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for ☺

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate ☺

The forum also have group weigh-ins every day if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page ☺

You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you may have a 'Newbie' badge. If you have any questions or would like a Newbie badge please just ask ☺

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too ☺

Best wishes

Anna

I've just got my four stone weight loss target, moving from a BMI of 32.8 to a healthy 24. My top tips include planning every mouthful, setting half stone goals and never having a day off from it! I see it as a change of lifestyle rather than a diet. Took me 8 months. First few months were hard but when I saw results it was much easier. Good luck! You can do it. Honest!

Hi CherylDee, I have had arthritis in all my joints since my late 20s, I'm 44 now, I have suffered over the years, working and bringing up my 2 girls too, but a few years ago I lost 5 stone and seriously I was a different person. I went from a size 20 to 10/12. The arthritis eased off and I was full of life, not tired all the time, had so much energy. Slowly loose the weight through sensible eating and start off with some walking, as you loose the weight you will be more mobile and can build on your exercise. I have about 1.5 stones to loose which I put back on after going through a divorve and moving area due to stress. I go gym now and eat sensibly and have no issues with my joints even though the arthritis is still there. I work and bring up my girls on my own. I'm proof that you can beat the arthritis so that you can have a normal healthy life :). Good luck.

Thank you all for your replies and encouragement :-) I joined early hours of the morning, and completely forgot which website I'd joined!!! Still need to get more motivated. Have made quite big changes to my diet but after a month I have lost no weight what so ever! Unfortunately for some reason I seem to have flare ups of the Arthritis and until it settles down exercise is a nightmare...and it is my feeling that is exercise that will make the difference.

Thanks again, and wishing everyone best wishes in the battle of the bulge x

Hello again CherylDee

Well done on making changes to your diet, if the weight isn't shifting you perhaps just need a small tweak in calories. Exercise is very beneficial in many ways but to lose fat it really is a question of calorie reduction, 😊
