I suspect the scales. If you've been exercising and you can tell yourself that you are losing weight then the scales might well be the culprit. I had the same issue - I was using cheap mechanical scales. They were hopeless - in accurate and inconsistent. Unless the ones you are using are real balances with sliding weights it will be inconsistent scales. I bought a set of really accurate weight watchers ones from Argos (about £30) they had really good reviews and I trust them. Previously after two weeks my weight had not moved and it was really de-motivating. Now I can see the impact of everything I do good and bad.
If its not the scales then have a really hard look at your calorie intake. I had to learn all this from scratch. I had a really healthy diet for three people! Way too much on the plate.
The main thing to think about is you've had a puzzle to deal with and you've done the right thing! Asking a question on here to gather a few views. Much Much better than thinking "What the heck! Pass the Muffin!"
Is the Gym a new activity for you. I have heard that if you begin to build up muscle, this can initially replace the fat you are losing in weight. Did you measure yourself at the beginning, measuring your waist, hips, tops of arms and thighs can also be a good indicator. If you didn't then do your clothes feel like they fit better.
Are you counting the calories accurately, including drinks? Are you actually measuring/weighing. I was amazed at how the calories add up from just a little extra milk or that extra couple of grams of rice or pasta etc. Your weight will vary from day to day and week to week depending on what's going on in your body, other than exercise and food, so if you have a couple of weeks where you don't lose much but know you have stayed within calorie allowance and exercised then It will probably show another week. Swings and roundabouts so to speak.
If it becomes an ongoing issue then it may be worth asking your doctor for blood tests to check your thyroid function.
Only weigh yourself once a week at approximately the same time, same place and same scales. Never in between. I know how hard it is to jump on the scales when you feel like you've lost a bit but because of how your body weight varies from day to day once a week is definitely the way to go.
Measuring weight is quite an intricate business. My weight varies by about 8 pounds through the day due to food and drink, and then there is clothing to take into account.
If you weigh yourself naked first thing on the same morning each week, you minimise some of the variables.
Then there is the gym. Exercising will change the water balance in your body, and so your weight. It's great for your health, but isn't very good at helping with weightloss. Running for an hour is the equivalent of 3-4 ounces of bodyweight. It wouldn't take much in the way of a recovery snack to offset that.
But keep doing what you are doing. The weight will start dropping again if you are eating right
You feel good, your body shape is changing..are you using other forms of measuring too. Meaning waist etc. scales can be our best buddy or worst gremlin. I'm just about to invest in some good scales as suggested by Andrew, and then....they won't move and it will be my yardstick. The best result for me will be getting to wear the clothes I want to wear again, not a number on a dial.
When you look in the mirror or you try on some jeans it's not the number on the scales that tells you you if your efforts are being successful its the way you look and feel.
It sounds like you can feel and see the results you just are not seeing them on a scale. EVERY diet including the NHS one, tel;ls you to not only weigh yourself but measure yourself as well - wast hips etc. because of exactly this reason.
Sometimes you work hard and see no difference in the scales but your body tells you that things have changed. If your scales don't reflect that this week they probably will next week.
I too joined the gym and although I felt better all my hard work paid off in losing just 1lb. After establishing that although it was only a pound it was a pound in the right direction. I was so happy with my inch loss though of 3inches which was amazing. It honestly works if you measure once a week as well as weigh. Great for motivation
