Gained weight?

sirkoala profile image

A couple weeks ago I started exercising more, eating less and eating healthier. At this point i only drink water too. I weighed 130kg to start and went down to 126 after about a week, ive now gone back up to around 128 but I’m doing more or less the same I did the first week? I can already see some changes but it’s very demotivating, has anyone had this experience?

Hello, sirkoala, and welcome to the forum :)

Unfortunately, there are lots of blips along the way for most of us. If you get involved with the life of the forum - particularly a weekly weigh-in and the Daily Diary - we'll be able to give you more specific suggestions for different things you might try.

About healthy eating: like you, when I came here I thought I was eating healthily: reading, asking questions, listening to people with experience and knowledge has meant that I am now eating very differently than I was a couple of years ago, and all the happier - and lighter - for it. Yes! I would recommend not looking at the scales but continuing what you are doing. It’s all about consistency and it takes time. Looking at the scales so soon can be very de motivating. Not to mention initially building muscle adds on extra weight but you notice the different in measurements. This is why many personal trainers will measure you and work with inches lost. Don’t be de motivated ! :)

Maybe your measurements went down but not the scale?

Are you retaining water because of period weight gain, salty food, tough exercise, sore muscles or dehydration? Or it could be normal daily fluctuations?

You said "eating less and eating healthier". Healthy food can have higher calories e.g. a sandwich can have more calories than a hamburger. Are your calories higher than when you started?

Is your scale working properly? Maybe it's too old?

You're doing great! You'll figure out what's wrong, if anything. Don't let the number get you down. Being healthier has already improved your life.

I very rarely have salty foods so I don’t think it’s that. I’ve been biking everyday for around 25-30 minutes, I’m also doing sit-ups, weights and swimming once a week so it could possibly be that. I drink water regularly but not regularly enough I think. I’m using MyFitnessPal to track what I eat and I always have around 800 calories (after exercise) left at the end of the day

I recently cycled London to Brighton and two days later the scales showed a gain of 1.5kgs. I know it wan't fat as I probably didn't come near to matching the cals burnt.

The administrators are doing there best to provide you with ideas on how to progress so it's well worth following up, reading all the links they've supplied.

Some people do well on their own but most do well by becoming active on this forum.

Well if you feel better and are eating good that’s ok .....me and my husband eat good healthy meals and do our daily exercise but unless I make that extra effort to keep within our calorie goal, which some days are well over, the scales don’t move, especially for my husband as he likes a few biscuits and more carbs🙄 on the days I stick rigidly or slightly under I lose.....but we have got into healthier habits and at least not gaining weight and every bit of loss is a bonus to getting fitter and healthier and feel it’s more sustainable than giving up completely. X

Hi I do read a lot on here but don’t always post much.....I’ve had to really try harder cutting down as can hardly walk or exercise with a painful leg which I am sure has been caused by statins and hoping it will get better when treated. Will try and have more positive input and help to others where I can. 🥰

It’s good to hear that you are reading posts and finding it helpful 👍. I also cannot exercise very much so need to keep a really close eye on food intake . . . It’s not easy is it?

Good luck and keep in touch, Wednesday weigh in is a particularly friendly one 😊

Yes! Been there many times. Your weight will always fluctuate a bit, but there are lots of things than can cause a higher number on the scale. Are you eating ENOUGH? you said you were exercising more. Maybe you arent eating enough to sustain what your body needs and it has gone into that mode of holding on to everything for fear of starvation. Dumb, but true! Also, when you exercise , especially at the beginning your muscles hold on to water so that will cause the scale to go up. Just be patient!! Your body will adjust and figure it all out. If you are eating less, drinking water and exercising, it will happen!
