Hi everyone,

Last Monday I weighed 13 stone 5.8 pounds, and today I weigh 13 stone 5.2 pounds, so I've lost 0.6 pound this week. I'm thankful to have lost something, because I've not had a great week health wise. Last week I had discovered that I have a chest infection and started a course of antibiotics. Unfortunately they didn't work, so I was prescribed another course of different antibiotics - it is still slow progress, but I think it's slowly shifting. Hopefully I"ll be be back to normal again soon.

My goals for this week are to try to get better, and eat healthy foods. I'm not going to do any exercise till the chest infection has gone, as I don't want to make myself worse. I don't have any energy for that anyway and have been keeping warm and drinking fluids to stay hydrated.

I was relieved to have lost 0.6 pound, as I had feared that I had put on weight this week. I know there are a lot of coughs and colds around at the moment, and I'm looking forward to being healthier again soon.

I hope you've had a good week yourself, and I hope you'll join me for this Monday weigh-in. If you're new, and fancy joining us - please do, you would be very welcome! Everyone is welcome to join in.

Hi Suzybenj,

Wow, great to hear you're in the mood to lose some weight - that sounds like a great start to the week!!! Your healthy lunch box pack sounds great, hope you enjoy it, and hope you have a really good week.

Thanks for your kind words - I'm sure I'll be back to normal again soon.

Have a great week.

Lowcal :-)

Hi Lowcal well done for the weight loss. Sorry you are still not well. Take care and hope you feel better soon.

I have stayed the same weight this week. At least I haven't put any on! I didn't expect to lose weight this week as I have been eating too much! Fortunately have been walking to compensate.

I am hoping to get back on track this week but have been finding it really hard. I am hoping now my antidepressants have kicked in and I feel so much more myself now that I can eat less biscuits and lose a little this week. No more excuses!!

Have a good week😄

Hi Pog1,

Thanks very much. I am feeling a lot better than I was last week, so I'm on the mend.

Well done for maintaining your weight this week - you mentioned that you've been eating quite a bit this week, so your walking must have compensated. Really glad to hear you've noticed an improvement in your mood, and I'm sure that will help you to get back on track this week.

Wishing you a great week ahead.

Hi Size12goal,

Thank you so much for your encouraging words - I appreciate them. I hope you are having a good week yourself, and that you're getting closer to your goal.

Wishing you a great week ahead.

Hi Lowcal. It's fair enough not to expect yourself to lose weight while you're not well. Hope you start to feel much better soon. Maybe you need more of that chicken broth?? Also ginger and lemon tea etc, keep throwing everything at it, and lots of rest of course.

I joined you for the first time last week at 12st4 and today am 12st2. So despite a week where 3 days out of 7 I definitely ate a lot more than I should for losing weight, the other 4 days seem to have had an effect. Hope I can keep this up.

Hi Ruth_canal_runner,

Congratulations to you on losing 2 pounds in your first week - that's really great!!! Really good. Hope you're finding it ok, and enjoying it.

I followed your advice re: the chicken broth last week - and it was really nice. You're right, I should get some more for this week. I love Ginger and Lemon tea - not had any for a long time. I must have a look and see if there are any left in the cupboard. Thanks for the tip.

Wishing you another great week ahead.

Lowcal :-)

in reply toZest

Thanks Lowcal. Yes I feel very encouraged to have at least got off to a good start, losing 2lb. It's possibly the stage where you lose water rather than burning fat, so I'm aware I need to make sure I do everything I'm meant to be doing, as best as I can, to really get some weight loss underway. Your 0.6lb is not bad either. Maybe on a basic set of scales like mine it would be rounded up to 1lb ;-)

Really glad to have found this support online, hope I can be of some support in reutrn.

I have a friend who is an athlete but also suffers badly from chesty coughs, due to a medical problem in the past. She has lots of smoothies and vitaminy things when she's ill, and rests, and gets really grumpy. I guess there's no easy answer. Hope you are fully recovered soon, and don't feel disheartened in the meantime.

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to

Hi Ruth_canal_runner,

Yes, I think grumpiness can come with chesty coughs - they are very annoying! But thankfully I'm beginning to feel less grumpy and more positive, which tells me I'm on the mend. :-)

I have passed on your recommendation of chicken broth to Rosiegreenpea as she has also gone down with a chesty cold today.

I also had some Lemon and Green tea today too - I found some in the cupboard, and it was really good! Thanks for the suggestion. :-)

Enjoy your day!

Hi Sidcup1,

Thanks for your encouraging words. I do hope to shake the infection off this week - I think it's finally on its way 'out' - it got me down for a while, but I'm feeling more positive in mood again this week, so that's a good sign!!!

Hope you enjoyed your weekend away. Well done for maintaining your weight - I know you had feared that you might gain some weight as a result of your weekend away, but you haven't, which is great!

Im also starting my healthy eating from this morning . When your off sick it becomes real easy to just sit on the sofa and veg out watching crap tv and eating rubbish so im telling myself no tv till ive done my goal targets each day . Well done you for losing too as long as its downwards I think

Hi Imgoingtobethin,

A warm welcome to you, and thanks for joining us for today's weigh-in. I agree with you that it's very easy to eat too much when you're off sick - I was definitely 'comfort eating' quite a bit last week, but thankfully didn't go too overboard.

Congratulations on losing 1 pound - that's really great. I hope you're feeling reasonably ok after having your gall-bladder taken out. Recuperate well - you sound like you're looking after yourself sensibly, and that's really good!

Thanks for your encouraging words - and here's to another 'downwards' (weight-wise) week ahead.

Hi Lowcal, sorry you're still not back to normal :( I'm glad you've still managed to lose some weight though which will help to keep you motivated.

I weighed in last week and this week I have stayed the same :| it has not been a good week as I had a panic attack last Monday (scary is not the word!!) then started with a cough, cold, sore throat etc etc which hasn't cleared yet so exercise has been limited to cleaning at home and walking the dogs - better than nothing but a bit limiting.

I am due on this week so will concentrate on not giving in to cravings and trying to step up my exercise levels!

Hope everyone posting has a fab healthy week :)

Kate x

Hi Kate,

So sorry to hear you had a panic attack last Monday - that sounds like a scary start to the week - hope you've not had any more since then. Also sorry to hear you've got a horrible cough, cold, sore throat etc - not good!!! Amazing how periods can end up coinciding when we feel bad - I am thankful mine is nearly over, and I hope you are able to resist those cravings this week.

Be careful on the exercise front - your body needs to recover and recuperate from your cough, cold, sore throat - so try not to overdo it. Look after yourself, and get better. Keep warm, hydrated, and get better soon.

Looking forward to 'fab healthy weeks ahead'. :-)

Hi Lowcal, I'm happy that you managed to lose some weight even though you couldn't exercise and were not feeling well. It shows a big commitment on your behalf!

After week 5 I have lost 800g/1.7 pounds and my BMI is 27.2 (overweight). Not a big loss but at least I've been able to zip up a pair of jeans I haven't worn since October, so that's a good sign.

Take care!!

Congratulations to you on losing 1.7 pounds this week - I think that's an excellent loss - I know you said it's "not a big loss", but I think it is really a very good loss - you should definitely celebrate it. :-)

Zipping up that pair of jeans that you've not been able to wear since October shows you how good your weight loss is - it's definitely a good sign!

Wishing you another great week ahead.

Morning ladies, well done on your loss Lowcal back on the bus for me I am 11st 1.5 lbs the same as I was last week didn't weigh in though -too busy going out for lunch. I am much more disciplined on work days, and the fact that dec/jan I did only 6 days work in 6 weeks shows, plus it was all the celebrating mums 80th and sisters 50th. So now at my heaviest for around 18 months, this is crunch time previously I would have happily carried on gaining, but NO! Aim this week is to be below 11 when I weigh in on monday, fingers crossed have a great week folks

Hi, So glad your feeling better, it's not easy watching your food when you don't feel well, just think though fruit and veg are good for you so will help get you fit again.

I have lost one pound this week, down to 13.7 so have lost 8 lbs over 5 weeks, really pleased.Need to get back on the treadmill this week, we are both retired and were out looking at new cars last week so my routine went out of the window.

Good Luck for next week, you deserve it after doing so well in the begining.

Good Luck to everyone else.

Hi Lowcal,

Sorry to hear that chest infection isn't keen to budge, you are having a really rough time at the moment and it's such a downer but I think it's great that you have managed to lose some weight despite feeling so unwell, especially after two lots of antibiotics.

Unfortunately I've come down with something similar and don't feel at all like getting weighed this morning, just ache all over, probably going back to bed shortly but will get weighed tomorrow if I'm feeling a bit better.

Really wanted to get down to 10st 8 before my 70th which was last week but not stressing about it - there will be plenty of time to get back on track once I've shaken this thing off and I'm more into planning meals again.

See you all soon and keep at it. :-)

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply toRosiegreenpea

Hi Rosiegreenpea,

Firstly, a belated Happy Birthday for your 70th last week - I hope you enjoyed your Birthday celebrations. So sorry to hear you're not feeling very well today - good idea to go back to bed to recuperate - and I hope you feel better soon.

Hope you have something healthy for lunch - maybe a warming soup. I had chicken soup for my lunch and it was really delicious. Ruth_canal_runner suggested having chicken broth last week, and it's really good!

Look after yourself, Rosiegreenpea, and don't feel obliged to weigh yourself until you feel 'ready' - take care, and hope you feel better soon.

Put on 1k over the weekend - but it was to be expected! Family pub lunch - party buffet - hotel breakfast plus wine (not for breakfast though!) - so could have been worse! Plus no exercise today - back gone - can't bend down to put my socks on! Will need to try again soon as I need to walk to the dentist! Hopefully back on track food wise - and have better news to report next week!

Sorry to hear your back has gone, and you can't put your socks on - hope you are able to get them on soon so you can attend your dental appointment with warm socks on.

You sound motivated to be back on track food-wise, and hope you have a great week. Hopefully your back will improve again so you can keep mobile.

Hi Lowcal well done on the weight loss, as you say at least it's a loss! I've come down with some chesty/coldy thing and feeling grim too. Diets are so difficult when you are feeling one under! Hey guys.

I am 12 stone 10 this week, so put on 2 pounds. After not losing anything the week before, and losing 0.2 of a pound the week before that, I'm getting a bit down. I did really well on my fast days last week and didn't over eat at all on the other days. I don't really understand.

I started off at around 12 stone 12 and got down to 12 stone 8 after the first two weeks of the 5:2, and for some reason it has completely stopped/backfired. I am on week 6 now, and only lost 2 pounds altogether.

I know I need to factor some exercise in, so I'm aiming to do that this week. If I don't, I fear I'll put on again.

Me and my partner are currently trying for a baby and I'm starting to wonder if it's even worth trying to lose a few pounds before we are successful. I know I will definitely not be doing the 5:2 while pregnant, but was considering maybe swapping over to the NHS plan when we get that BFP. Having said that, I'm also not going to obsess with my weight when pregnant and intend to allow myself some freedom with what I eat to an extent.

Well done on the loss, low cal! Sorry to hear you're still unwell. Hoping you'll be better this time next week :) x

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply toDreadydepp

Hi Dreadydepp,

Sorry to hear you gained some weight this week. I can understand that you are feeling despondent, but please try not to let it get you down too much. You have lost 2 pounds since you started your eating plan, and so you're significantly lighter than you were when you started - just imagine 2 pounds of butter sitting on a plate, and imagine trying to pick up those two pounds with one hand - it wouldn't be easy.

I do think that your suggestion to add in some exercise would be beneficial, because I think that exercise is a great combination with healthy food intake. I know you're doing the 5:2 plan, but I noticed that you're considering potentially doing the NHS plan - maybe have a read of it and see if there are any aspects you could add in to your current regime to strengthen it - for example week 7 of the plan has lots of tips for dining out and choosing from different cuisines of the world (Chinese, Indian etc). I've made the Fruit Banana Bran Cake (I think it's mentioned in week 10) and it is really healthy and delicious, and 132 calories per slice.

Good luck with your goal to get pregnant - and hope you have a good week.

Lowcal :-)

Dreadydepp profile image

Thanks for the encouragement, I need it! I did actually try the nhs plan and gave up after about 3-4 weeks. I'm useless with sticking to diets but I'm finding 5:2 easy to not give up! Will hopefully have good news for the weigh in next week :) good luck with yours xx

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply toDreadydepp

Yes, keep going, and at least you're finding 5:2 relatively easy and you're not giving up.

Hi Dreadydepp - if you can I'd keep going with trying to lose as many pounds as you can until you get pregnant! It will help in the end! Then eat healthily for both you and the baby! Hi Lowcal

Sorry you have been so poorly - hope you are on the mend now. Great you have lost some weight despite being ill - it is a good sign for when you feel better.

I have lost another 1lb this week - down to 12st - a total of 2 stone lost!!! I can hardly believe it. Slow and steady has worked for me - I want to carry on to my target of 11st so 1 stone left to go. I hope I don't get stuck on the 12 St mark - I got stuck for a while at 13 - thought the 12's would never happen!

Kitchen refurb grinds on - so eating is a bit chaotic and not as healthy as it might be. Exercise has been non existent - trying to juggle work and the kitchen has left no space for that. Hope next week will see it finished at last.

Hope everyone has a good week - and particularly that you feel start to feel much better x

Hi Walkthisway,

Thank you, I am feeling better than I was last week, and I do think these second lot of antibiotics are doing something, so I have hope for a recovery any time soon! Like you say, it's a good sign having an improvement in my mood.

Congratulations to you on losing 1 pound this week - and you've lost 2 stone in total - wow, that's really great!!! I hope you don't get stuck on the 12 stone mark, and that you can make the transition to the 11's very soon - hopefully next Monday!

I'm well stuck in the 13's at the moment, and the 12's seem like a distant memory of hope - but once I'm better I plan to strive to reach them. You saying you were stuck at the 13's and you're now nearly in the 11's is very inspiring, and I hope I will also get unstuck, like you did.

I hope your kitchen refurbishment will be finished next week, and then you'll have your space back and have more time available again to exercise.

Have a great week.

Being stuck at 13st was so frustrating - I felt like I was trying so hard and my weight did not move for about 4 weeks - I felt like giving up. I received loads of support from this site - as ever - and just thought - there is no option but to keep on trying. I didn't want to go backwards - So I just kept going - and suddenly 2 lbs were gone and I was in the 12s. You will get there - you were so close not very long ago. With the spring not too far away you are at a good time of year to get going again when you are better. Until then - you have already achieved so much - so just be proud of that for a while :)

I was stuck at 13st for what seemed ages - actually I wrote it down as 12st 14lbs to make me feel better! (Was even known to write 12st 16lbs at times). Now I'm at 11st 13lbs with a target of 11st 7lbs - so 6lbs to go! Don't they say the last 5lbs are hardest to shift! Hope not! By the way Lowcal managed to get socks on to go to the dentist! Hopefully back better for gym ness on Wednesday!

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply toJudywood

Hi Judywood,

So glad you managed to get into those socks - I was concerned for you that you might be getting cold feet.

Maybe there's something about the 13 stone marker - in terms of 'stickiness' - at least you and Walkthisway are evidence that people can get past those stuck moments and move forward. Using your conversion, I worked out I am currently 12 stone 19.2 lbs - I don't think I can get away with that. Best to admit I'm 13 stone 5.2 pounds… Never mind - hopefully in a month's time I'll be below 13 stone.

So great that you're just 6 pounds away from your target - let's hope they're wrong about the last 5 pounds being the hardest to shift. Enjoy your gym session on Wednesday!

Hi all, Lowcal: sorry to hear about the chest infection. I think you're right to give yourself complete rest until you recover. Staying hydrated is a good basic goal too, and important.

I haven't actually weighed myself yet: I do it at Boots and I haven't been near one today. However, I thought I'd check in anyway. Last week I vowed to do some thinking about my needs. And I've decided that what I actually need is rest. So I've taken a couple of days off work and have been using the time to gently amble in the sun (yes, it's been sunny down here in the SW) and to organise a holiday somewhere warm in March. I've also booked another day off next week to keep me going mentally. So my achievements in the last week have not been diet or scale related, but I have been looking after myself!

Have a great week everyone,

Thanks for your kind words.

Glad you checked in anyway - and that you had time to do some thinking about your needs - great that you took some time out to enjoy the sunshine, and especially good that you've planned a holiday for March - something lovely to look forward to! I think you've achieved a lot - looking after yourself mentally and physically is so important, and balancing out your needs so that they are adequately met means you have more resolve to achieve any other goals you set yourself, including your weight loss goals. Good luck on the scales, when you come across some - and think you have achieved a lot this week.

Have a great week.

Hi Ayla2012,

A very warm welcome to you and thanks for joining us today in this Monday weigh-in. Cravings can be very hard to cope with - I think it's important to try to eat healthy balanced meals that fill you up with good nutrients, and that balance out your blood sugars across the day. The NHS website has a 12 week structured plan that you might find helpful - it gives some advice and ideas. Have a read through it, and see what you think.

Nice that you've got a holiday planned - not sure when you're going on holiday, but it's good to have something nice to look forward to - can help to motivate you.

Hope you have a good week.

Well, I said I would get weighed this morning and I've gone up - now 11 st 1.25lb but will get back to dieting when this chest infection is sorted and I feel a little more human 😊. It's dissapointing but just a blip in the great scheme of things and I'm certainly not going to worry about it ( I'd only eat more if I worried) so see you next week when I'm fighting fit😀😀

Hi Rosiegreenpea,

A slight gain is just a blip, as you say, and you'll soon get that off again once you're feeling better.

Look after yourself, and get well - hope you feel better soon, and look forward to catching up with you next week.

Afternoon Lowcal and everyone!

Better late than never for me again! I'm sorry to hear you're still not on top form Lowcal! Hopefully you will shift this chest infection soon! :(

I have also had a bit of trouble, hence why I am late weighing in this week. I actually hurt my hip on the weekend and it left me unable to walk without much pain until today. Something as simple as swinging my leg out of bed on Friday to get up, there was a nasty clicking sound in my hip and a shooting pain and I could not walk! So my exercise has been zero since then! But not too bad today, still sore but I am able to hobble around, and managed to hop on the scales this morning to discover I am still the same at 12st 11lbs.

I suppose this is some good news but I can see me not being able to do any exercise either this week as I don't want to pull anything again! :( I shall just have to rely on eating healthily and keep my fingers crossed for the next weigh in.

I hope everyone has a good week and I hope to be fully recovered soon!

Hi Sophie,

It's great to see you, and I'm sorry to hear you've hurt your hip, and couldn't walk - that's really restricting for you, and I'm glad to hear you're feeling some improvement today and can at least hobble around. It's good that you've maintained your weight, as it would have been easy to gain some with the lack of exercise, so I think that's positive that you're the same.

Like you say, try to eat healthily and just recuperate as much as you can. I hope you recover really soon. I am fed-up of my chest infection - I do feel better in my mood, but hate coughing all the time and not being able to exercise. Never mind, just have to wait it out I guess - "this too will pass" - and it could be worse.

Wishing you a good week ahead. Hope you feel better soon. Thanks for your kind words - much appreciated.

Well done, and get well soon. how do I join your weekly weigh in?

Hi Jeep1122,

It's easy to join this weigh-in - just literally post your contribution - i.e. whatever you want to share - and look out for the Monday weigh-ins - they are dated with the Monday date. Some people add their contribution a few days later, and as long as I see their post I will always try to reply. I post the Monday weigh-in between 7am and 7.15am on Mondays, and the current date is in brackets after the title "Please Join Me for a Monday Weigh-in"(current Monday date inserted here).

I usually mention the NHS website pages 12 week structure as a good plan to lose weight, combining healthy eating and exercise, but people use different approaches to their weight loss, and in this weigh-in we report whatever we choose to share.

So please do join us if you'd like to Jeep1122, you would be very welcome.

Hi 2-2-Go,

A warm welcome to you! Thanks for linking in and joining us. I agree that having support from others is a really positive thing, and everyone is really supportive on this forum.

Have you seen the NHS website pages - as there's a 12 week structured plan and lots of advice for losing weight there.

Look forward to seeing you on Monday for the weigh-in, and hope you have a good weekend.
