I had a total Pancreatectomy 13 years ago and aThyroidectomy 2 years ago of Follicular cancer. I am on Levothyroxine 100mg. My weight is 55 kilos. My NHS blood test taken in December 24 were as follows:
TSH - 1.00
Free Thyroxine - 14.8
Free 3 - 3.2
Thyroglobulin. - undetectable
I have been trying to improve my vitamins and iron because I understand if these are optimal the Levothyroxine works better. I have been taking, B Vit, K 2, Vit C and Iron for about a month before my GP blood in January 25 and they seem improved as follows.
Serum ferritin 25 (was 14 in October)
Serum folate 13.5 (3.1-20)
Vit B 12 703 (187-883)
The vitamins and iron were all from Better You in spray form because not having a Pancreas stops my gut from absorbing properly. However I think the ingredient in them called Xylitol is giving me diarrhoea. That is listed as one of the side effects. Would you please give me your comments on these readings both the Thyroid and the Vitamins and if you know of any drops or sprays similar to Better You that does not have this ingredient in them
Thanks

Serum ferritin level is the biochemical test, which most reliably correlates with relative total body iron stores. In all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency
Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing.
It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron
Test early morning, only water to drink between waking and test. Avoid high iron rich dinner night before test
If taking any iron supplements stop 3-5 days before testing
Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption
This is interesting because I have noticed that many patients with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism, start to feel worse when their ferritin drops below 80 and usually there is hair loss when it drops below 50.
Thank you for your reply. The Thyroid blood test results came in a letter that I received this morning although the tests were taken in December. I had them done at 9.30 am I took my Levothyroxine (always Accord brand) after the test. I usually take it at 7.30am so there had been more that a 24 hour gap. The Thyroid Nurse had not included any ranges so I have left a message for her to ring me. I will take your advice and get a full iron test.
