Just received my blood test results

TSH 4.6 mIU/L (0.27 - 4.2)

FT3 3.7 pmol/L (3.1 - 6.8)

FT4 14.1 pmol/L (12 - 22)

THYROGLOBULIN ANTIBODIES 16.3 kIU/L (0 - 115)

THYROID PEROXIDASE ANTIBODIES 10.1 kIU/L (0 - 34 )

FOLATE 9.3 nmol/L ( > 7)

VITAMIN B12 - ACTIVE >150 pmol/L (37.5 - 188)

VITAMIN D 88.6 nmol/L (50 - 250)

FERRITIN 205 ug/L (30 - 264)

CRP HS 0.367 mg/L (< 3 )

I have mucin in arms, legs and belly.

I was diagnosed with Pernicious Anaemia/B12 deficiency. My last B12 jab was January, so I don't understand why my Active B12 would be so high.

My ferritin is quite high, it normally is between 29-35.

I feel so tired all the time but I don't understand why.

so Ft4 and Ft3 both extremely low and TSH over range

Free T4 (fT4) 14.1 pmol/L (12 - 22) 21.0%

Free T3 (fT3) 3.7 pmol/L (3.1 - 6.8) 16.2%

Folate very low

As you have B12 injections it’s recommended also to supplement a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid) may be beneficial.

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels between Injections

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 5-7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

endo.confex.com/endo/2016en...

endocrinenews.endocrine.org...

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg)

How much vitamin D are you taking

Vitamin D may be better over 100nmol

My ferritin is quite high, it normally is between 29-35.

Get GP to test full iron panel to see what iron levels are like

Gluten intolerance is often a hidden issue too.

Request coeliac blood test BEFORE considering trial on strictly gluten free diet

Thank you SlowDragon

I really don't understand what is going on.

I started to do every other day B12 jabs along with all of the co-factors, but I stopped them all in January after feeling no better.

My Ferritin back in January was 335 ug/l despite stopping iron 7 days before my blood test.

I haven't taken any supplements or B12 since the middle of January.

On the 12th August I'm getting tested for Coeliac as well as a full iron panel.

I stopped taking Vit D and K2 after suffering my 3rd Stroke in September, I'm on Apixaban so unsure if it's safe to take K2.

On the 15th August I have an appointment to see a rheumatolgist, I have so much joint pain.

I feel so much better after stopping statins back in March, I was on the maximum dose. Though the strokes are thought to be down to the hole in the heart which they discovered back in 2005 but never repaired.

I know that statins can cause joint pain in people with hypothyroidism.

Sorry for the long post

Are these private tests ….or done by GP

GP needs to see them

Or if they are disinterested….a thyroid specialist endocrinologist

Here’s link for how to request Thyroid U.K.list of private Doctors emailed to you, but within the email a link to download list of recommended thyroid specialist endocrinologists

Ideally choose an endocrinologist to see privately initially and who also does NHS consultations

What was B12 before starting on injections. Are diagnosed as low B12 or definitely Pernicious Anaemia

It takes many months for B12 to drop after injections

My Ferritin back in January was 335 ug/l despite stopping iron 7 days before my blood test.

What iron supplements were you taking in January

Presumably not taken iron supplements since then

These are tests done by medichecks.

My GP said to have private tests on thyroid and she will act on them if they are out of range.

The only one out of range is TSH, though it's only just over.

I was taking Ferrous Fumarate, but stopped at least 7 days before the blood test.

I have so much pain. Especially in neck/spine, shoulders, knees, hip, hands and feet. Diagnosed with PA/b12 deficiency by a private doctor- Raised MMA. 37.4 (range <32)

Good morning SlowDragon

I have just received these results from my GP

SERUM IRON LEVEL: 50.1 UMOL/L (47.0 - 70.0)

TRANSFERRIN SATS 35.1% (16.0 - 50.0)

SERUM TIBC: 50.1 UMOL/L (47.0 - 70.0)

SERUM FERRITIN: 212 UG/L ( 28 - 200)

Serum B12 623 ng/L (180 - 640)

Serum Folate 3.5 ug/l (3.0 - 20.0)

No B12 / co-factors since December/January.

My ferritin has been between 27 - 40 for years, why is it so high now?

I'm 53, last period 55 days ago.

Thank you

Low folate

supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid)

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels too

Difference between folate and folic acid

healthline.com/nutrition/fo...

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid supplements

thyroidpharmacist.com/artic...

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus B complex popular option. Nice small tablets. Most people only find they need one per day. But a few people find it’s not high enough dose

Post discussing different B complex

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Thorne Basic B recommended vitamin B complex that contains folate, but they are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule) Thorne can be difficult to find at reasonable price, should be around £20-£25. iherb.com often have in stock. Or try ebay

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 5-7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

with above range TSH

GP should retest thyroid levels again in another 6 weeks

Also presumably you are menopausal

Get GP to test sex hormones

Thank you, I will have a read through this information

I think it’s your thyroid blood results problem here. Your TSH is far too high meaning your t4 and t3 levels are too low which is also shown in those results. You need more thyroxine both T4 and definitely T3. Ask your gp and or Endo to increase your t4 dose. Then recheck to see if your t3 increases. If t3 doesn’t increase then request t3 medication.

diamondgirl902 profile image
diamondgirl902 in reply toMcPammy

Thanks McPammy,

I'm not medicated, but I feel shocking.

I thought it was B12 deficiency/PA but despite every other day jabs along with all co-factors for 7 months, I can't say I felt any better.

I suffered two strokes last year, one in March and a major one in September, aged 52.

At the age of 34 I suffered a huge stroke and was in hospital for 2 months, learning to talk, talk etc.

They found a PFO (hole in heart) but never closed it. My new cardiologist is referring me to Stoke hospital asking for closure of the PFO.

I'm sure it's thyroid making me feel I have no energy. I'm existing and not living, I feel like an old woman.

Oh dear you have had a lot to cope with over the years and still today. I’m sorry but I don’t know anything about your heart condition really. I have a thyroid problem Hashimoto’s and a very poor converter of T4 to the magical T3 hormone. You could try to get your thyroid checked privately if you wanted through Monitor my Health on line. They are not expensive and it’s a very quick turn around. Just a thought. I hope you start to feel better soon. Xx

Thank you, the above tests have just came back from Medichecks

McPammy profile image
McPammy

Sorry yes you did say in your post. I would suggest from those results your TSH is too high and T4 and T3 are too low. But the antibodies look alright. So, maybe you are starting to have thyroid issues? It’s tricky. You definitely need to keep your eye on your thyroid bloods. Your B12 looks ok. Not sure why ferritin would be that high. Do you take supplements for it. I see a private only endocrinologist who is brilliant and actually listens. If you want to go private only just private message me for his details.

Thank you for replying.

I haven't taken any supplements or B12 jabs since January.

My ferritin is normally low, I stopped iron tablets back in January, 7 days before my blood test.

My ferritin in January 335ug/L

Ferritin now 205 ug/L which is still high.

I stopped all B12 jabs and all co- factors a week before January's blood test and I've not taken any since.

I know that ferritin can be raised with inflammation or infection etc.

McPammy profile image
McPammy in reply todiamondgirl902

Yes it can be inflammation. Graves’ disease can cause it to be high. Or other inflammation elsewhere in the body. Your Dr really needs to help you here.

diamondgirl902 profile image

Yes, I need to take my private tests in and see what she says.

I certainly don't feel good
