Good Morning Unfortunately I was told that due to damage to blood cells during the test procedure ( it was finger prick test( that the folate & ferritin could not be processed. I am going to email blue horizon about retesting for these the folate & ferritin are a very important part of the results. Also blue horizon seem to be saying my b12 is high at 150 pmol but I was told previously via my nhs gp blood test I had low b12 at 470 really confused with it all. They also say magnesium is high but I dont supplement at all with magnesium. I haven't taken a multivitamin for years. I just purchased b12 and a multivitamin with b12 & magnesium thinking I was deficient. Blue horizon charge £99 for this finger prick test. I expected the results to be explained a bit clearer than they have been. Plus no ferritin or folate results.

Others will be far more knowledgeable re your results, I was largely picking up ‘absences’ ! I had no folate result in a mixed batch once for this reason a few years ago, and Medichecks replaced the test kit free of charge… always do venous bloods now! As you say the ferritin/ folate results may well be the most important. The B12 test above is the better ‘active’ test, with lower range, the NHS one will be ‘serum’ with far greater range, so you can’t compare the two. A second test would also show if results like highish magnesium persist…. Your TSH at 2.21 is high if you are on levo etc. treatment, not sure if you have been diagnosed hypothyroid, but see like me you have fibromyalgia which comes with pain and fatigue but does not show up in blood tests!

Thanks so much for replying. Yes, fibromyalgia branches to so many different symptoms it's so frustrating.

I have emailed blue horizon re them sending another test. I have auto immune oral lichlen plantus along with DDD osteoporosis carpal tunnel both hands so I was hoping the BH test would shed some light on my worsening symptoms.

They were taken but the blood was haemolysed so they couldn’t be tested.

Magnesium blood test is if no use, if doesn't reflect intracellular levels. This blood test measures Active B12 whereas your GP measured Total B12, hence the difference.

Thanks for replying. I purchased a b12 supplement going by my nhs blood test so confused now BH says high🤔 so the magnesium results are not really meaning anything.

If you have taken the B12 supplement before the second blood test it will skew the results. Do you eat meat and dairy? are you on PPIs or metformin. Have you had any gastric surgery? Being vegi or on these medications can affect B12 levels. If there is no known cause for your low B12 result you might well have pernicious aneamia and need injections. It would be worth posting of the pernicious aneimia forum for more expert advice. B12 blood tests are very unreliable so often worth a trial of injections to see if they help especially as you are symptomatic.

Good morning I am quite confused with the blood test due to the Dr's comments of having high b12 and high magnesium. The BH test cost £99 its a finger prick thyroid test. My nhs blood test for b12 says I'm normal low level of b12. The way blue horizon report the results could be laid out in an easier to read format. I have checked online and this is what I found regarding b12 levels.

High serum vitamin B12 is defined by a rate above 950 pg/ml (701 pmol/l), which corresponds by biological standards, to the upper limit of biological normality, in the absence of any sign and/or clinical anomaly.?

So according to this I am not high b12 as blue horizon have reported?

I have emailed BH this information requesting another test to be sent out.

I don't eat dairy but chicken and occasional red meat. No ppi or metformin. Asthma inhalers plus Amytriptyline daily.

labs vary with their ranges of normality.My son had simialr results to yourself, one test he was low in range then another 10 days later he was middle of the range. He is improving on some B12 injections. What is low in range in this country would be considered deficient in other places. I started B12 injections when I was over the range due to oral supplements, the difference it has made is huge.

It's very confusing with the way here in the UK the ranges aren't kept the same throughout testing labs. Confusing for us the layman trying to understand and gain better health. I thought about b12 injections but wary now the results show high. I will try and retest again. Many Thanks

Sometimes if there are no supplements a high result can indicate a kidney problem other wise a high result is nothing to worry about, you cannot have too much B12.

Understand with different levels depending on what lab is used. I've taken my b12 today it's a food based b12 by wild nutrition so I will ask them their thoughts on my results.

Very expensive test then no folate or ferritin. Not a good advertisement for blue horizon. I'm not impressed with them at all.

Yes I agree. I have used Randox for F4etc so need to check whether they do something on ferritin etc

I used to have no probs with doing a pinprick iron profile and it was so useful and simple for checking whether I needed to take iron as this often was the case when my ferritin levels even in the 50’s.

Last year ihad 2 attempts each with Medichecks, Blue Horizon and NHS Monitor health and all haemolysed! Sometimes it was within another blood test and sample worked fine with those but not ferritin and folate, so can’t help thinking something has changed testwise! So frustrating. Sorry you’ve had similar probs.

My magnesium always reads above range too, but not supplementing it.

Personally Ive not always found the Drs reports helpful that accompany them. They haven’t picked up on highly raised TIBC in iron profile,bwhich the good folk on here have taught me means supplemental iron is needed. B12 levels are not always excellent as they state, some of us feel appalling when the test results read higher. Mine were recently 600, but have pretty severe neuro symptoms and extremely exhausted to name but a few. I’d say always put your results on here and you’ll be in very safe hands! Really hope you soon get somewhere…take care

you don’t say what meds you’re on. You might need more thyroxine even though you’re ’within range’ . If you’re older, menopausal, post menopausal, don’t convert T4 adequately -many reasons - your meds may be inadequate. Always be guided by how you feel!!

My gp wouldn't check my thyroid levels so I purchased the test with BH. I haven't been diagnosed with low thyroid but it runs in my family. I have been feeling so unwell I thought it wise to check. Thank you for your reply.

Serum ferritin level is the biochemical test, which most reliably correlates with relative total body iron stores. In all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency.

Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing.

It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron

Test early morning, only water to drink between waking and test. Avoid high iron rich dinner night before test

If on iron supplements stop 5-7 days before testing
