vitamins advice

Hello, I am looking to get some advice once again if possible? I posted a few weeks ago with my medichecks results as above. My ferritin was low and vitamin d. I have been taking prescribed iron tablets from drs and taking vitamin D too for 3 weeks.

I am wondering what other vitamins I could/should be taking. Should I start taking selenium and/or zinc to help with conversion? Or anything else? B complex?

thanks I’m advance. All advice is much appreciated as I can’t get much help with the drs.

Advice about B Complex was given in reply to your previous post here :

Zinc and copper should be balanced. We Hypos often have one high and the other low. Best to test to see if you need to supplement.

Selenium again is best tested but some sources say 100mcg is safe to take without testing.

Thank you.

where can I get those tested? Do you not recommend supplementing zinc/copper?

What is selenium in? I can’t eat nuts. Is there anything else I could be eating? Or maybe I will supplement it.

Is there anything else you recommend I need to be doing to help with my results?

Do you know if anxiety/cortisol can increase free thyroxine? And not necessarily due to over medication?

Re, what else has selenium in.

Link is first thing I googled and also posted a link to what many GPs and dietitian use in NHS.

I used this test for selenium and zinc but it does not include copper

cerascreen.co.uk/products/m...

Individually the selenium and zinc tests are £69 each so the bundle is best value. The magnesium test isn't particularly good as it's serum magnesium not red cell. Serum magnesium test is unreliable as about 99% of magnesium is stored in bone, muscles and soft tissues, leaving about 1% in the blood. So testing what's in the blood isn't giving an accurate picture of our magnesium status. Red cell magnesium testing is expensive so not included in these bundles. I just used this test purely for the selenium and zinc tests.

There may be other labs who do them and include copper but I don't know of any.

Do you not recommend supplementing zinc/copper?

I would not advise it until you have tested, seen your levels and know which, if any, you need to supplement.

CoeliacMum has given you a couple of links to which foods contain selenium.

Or maybe I will supplement it.

If you are going to supplement then choose selenium l-selenomethionine or a yeast bound selenium as they are organic and more bioavailabe, avoid the inorganic less bioavailable forms selenite or selenate.

I would suggest you don't supplement more than 100mcg without testing first.

This is a good selenium 100mcg and is a small tablet with virtually no odour, a lot of selenium supplements can have an unpleasant odour:

Do you know if anxiety/cortisol can increase free thyroxine?

I can't help with that I'm afraid, have you done a 24 hour saliva cortisol plus DHEA test?

I have never used them but Medicines OnLine offer a £75 bundle of tests. No selenium but they do test magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc and copper.I was looking to get my zinc and copper tested but after seeing their Trust Pilot reviews, I discounted them. 45% 1 star reviews . 44% 5 star. I don't think I'll risk it.

Very wise. I don’t know how people with limited financial resources are ever going to access all these tests which they supposedly need.
