What vitamins do people with hypothyroidism or hashimotos take? I currently only take vitamin D but would be interested in taking more if it will help me feel better.

My main problem at the moment is muscle and joint aches. Any advice would be appreciated.

Butterfly_Lady,

Muscle and joint aches can be due to undermedication of Levothyroxine, low vitamin D, or low iron/ferritin. What are your recent thyroid results and ranges and how low was vitD when you started supplementing and how much are you supplementing?

Ask your GP to check ferritin, B12 and folate which are commonly low in hypothyroid patients.

Hi Butterfly_lady

People will more than likely advise you to be tested before you take B12 and Iron but as hypos have absorption and gut issues we are usually quite low in a few things.

I take B complex and B12 in the morning. Vit C a bit later. I was supplementing Iron but levels are okay now.

Vit D ( when required ) in the evening and Magnesium ( said to be very important for muscle and joints ) and a lot of people benefit from supplementing with Magnesium and notice a reduction in pain.

Were you tested before you started taking Vitamin D and do you take Vit K with it? It is asvised.

I'm sure more members will help :) ( apologies, there were no replies when I started writing )

Thank you for your reply. I'm due my next blood test the end of march. Consultant has asked for full blood work up. Vitamins, thyroid levels and also checking for diabetes, coeliac disease.

I started taking vit d after speaking to pharmacist. Magnesium sounds like a good idea but will wait until I have blood test I think.

Yes as Clutter says you need ferritin, folate, B12 and Vitamin D testing overall. You will probably find some things are low. I wasn't tested for Magnesium I just took it but I'm not advising that as I'm no expert. I believe it's quite important to test for Vitamin D though before you start supplementing.

You will be fine to take a B complex and Vitamin C, they are water soluble and any excess will just flush away.

I take 1000mg of Vitamin C every day, I believe it helps me a lot.

A lot go gluten free and find a great improvement with their gut and with inflammation and joint pain. Going gluten free has also been proved to reduce antibodies in Hashis. Turmeric is also popular with easing inflammation now too.

You'll get there,
